In an attempt to launch the new Syfy (which I still think was a terrible idea for a name change), Syfy rolled out their latest new show Warehouse 13. I was always planning on watching the series but I really never delved too much into the series so I really didn’t have huge expectations. While the pilot was long, I have to say that unless things change quickly I expect Warehouse 13 to stay on my television schedule for quite some time.
Let’s get it out there right away that I felt last night’s episode was pretty much your typical pilot episode. Pilot episodes are obviously needed in order to get audiences introduced to the show and characters but this leads to one of the problems of most pilots. They are usually not a great representation of the pacing of the typical episode. Seeing that Warehouse 13 was a two hour pilot on top of that and you shouldn’t be surprised that I felt the pilot suffered from the same problems as most pilots.I expect in an hour format things will be much more condensed and that will help some of the pacing problems of the pilot.
With that out of the way I still have high expectations for the series. Now that the introductions and initial character development are out of the way I think Warehouse 13 can continue to grow on what is working for the show. There are two things in particular that I think will lead to Warehouse 13 being a good to great show.
First the characters are interesting. While the two leads still need a little more development, I already like Artie (I really don’t know how you couldn’t). In my opinion a show can rarely be successful without a strong cast of characters. Good news for Warehouse 13 is that it appears that they are on a good path to strong characters.
The other thing going for Warehouse 13 is the fact that the show doesn’t take itself too seriously. This show is obviously not based in reality so there is no need to keep it very realistic. Make it wacky, funny, and just entertaining. If the show continues to not take itself too seriously I think the show will continue to be an entertaining distraction from everyday life which is what television is meant for.
So the pilot episode was a little long and had the same problems as so many other pilots, but I think Warehouse 13 is going to be a good show. After having seen the pilot, what are your thoughts on Warehouse 13?
