Last night’s episode of Ugly Betty was an episode of departures. As a matter of fact, four characters departed in the episode alone. While I approved of one of the departures, the other three kind of left me shaking my head since I didn’t think any of them were good choices. Due to this fact I didn’t think the episode was any better than an average episode of Ugly Betty. Since there were basically four storylines this week I have decided to break down my thoughts on the episode based on storyline.
Alexis’ Departure: Alexis gets a plea deal for just community service (a great deal in my opinion after almost killing someone). When Wilhelmina finds out though she uses her push with the DA (she sleeps with him) in order to get him to bump up the charges to attempted murder. Wilhelmina then tells Alexis that she can get the charges dropped as long as Alexis gives up her part of the Meade empire to her. Alexis refuses but Claire comes up with the idea that she gives up her portion so Wilhelmina and Daniel share control over Meade. Alexis then leaves New York for Paris. While I knew the show was going to write off Alexis, I personally think this is a pretty stupid way to do it. While Alexis wasn’t the greatest character, I still thought her character shouldn’t have been wrotten off and especially not in such a stupid way.
Gio’s Return: Betty is glad when she finds out that GIo has returned from Rome. Gio isn’t glad to see her. He actually still hates her for not going with him to Rome. Betty tries to win him back but nothing works. Betty even gets some rare cheese for Gio but not even that works. Gio thinks Betty is too selfish and only thinks about herself. Gio thinks she live in Betty Suarez Land. Betty doesn’t realize this at first but she eventually does realize she does think about herself a lot. Betty and Gio appear to make up but it is not clear. While I don’t think Betty and Gio ever made a good couple, I don’t know why the show isn’t keeping Gio to remain Betty’s friend. I believe the show really has no plans to bring Gio back which is disappointing since I liked their friendship.
The Wife That Makes Herself Known: Hilda and Tony end up using Betty’s apartment again and Tony’s wife actually follows them there. Since it is Betty’s apartment she thinks that Betty is the one cheating with Tony. She ends up meeting with Hilda to tell her to let Betty know that she should back off. Hilda finds out that Tony’s wife really cares for him and really wants a chance to try and win him back. When Tony shows up that night Hilda breaks it off since she doesn’t want to be the person that came between Tony and his wife. I personally would have to say that I am pretty happy since I was kind of getting sick of the realtionship. The whole story about him being married was getting pretty old in my opinion. I also knew it wasn’t going to last because the actor who plays Tony wasn’t hired for more than a couple episodes.
DJ’s Return Home: Daniel finds out from Alexis that she is actually DJ’s father. Daniel is upset since he really cares about DJ. DJ’s grandparents end up finding out and get the courts to rule in their favor. They end up coming to New York to bring him back home. Daniel doesn’t want him to lose him so he has Betty and Gio take him to Coney Island. At Coney Island DJ learns that Daniel isn’t his real father. He ends up running away but Daniel eventually finds him. Daniel decides to let DJ return home to France to stay with his grandparents. Daniel promises to visit him a lot in France as his fun uncle. I personally wished DJ would have stayed in the picture since I liked the new Daniel. I am probably in the minority but I liked that DJ finally started helping Daniel grow up and actually become an adult.
