Ugly Betty returned to the airwaves last night after the holiday break. The first half of the season was a little hit and miss with the show making some good choices while also making some bad choices. So I was anticipating how the show would come back after the break. While the episode wasn’t perfect, I have to admit that I was impressed with the episode. So as not to anger Ugly Betty fans who haven’t seen the episode yet, let’s discuss the episode after the break.
We’ll begin with the big storyline of the week. For Betty’s class at YETI she is forced to network and find more contacts. Betty has trouble networking until Marc teaches her how to and Betty becomes the Bettynator and gets all the contacts she needs. It typical Betty fashion though she ends up ruinging the next issue of Mode. She meets Teri (Nicki Blonsky from the recent Hairspray remake) who ends up getting info out of Betty about Mode’s next issue which she ends up sharing with Elle magazine. Before I continue I have to give Ugly Betty some props for a great guest casting. Unlike Lindsy Lohan earlier in the season, I thought Nicki Blonsky was perfect for the role and I would actually like it if she returned to the show as a recurring role as Betty’s nemesis.
Teri ends up stealing a dress that Mode is going to use for their photo shoot but Betty and Marc end up sneaking into Elle’s headquarters in order to steal it back. While Betty’s character is actually starting to change quite a bit this season, I am really liking the fact that the show is letting Betty and Marc expand their careers. It is also giving Marc an opportunity to show that he is kind of a misunderstood character. Hopefully Ugly Betty doesn’t abandon having Betty and Marc advance their careers like the show seemed to do in season two.
Meanwhile back at the Suarez home, Ignacio and Hilda get upset with Betty when she spends too much time at work instead of helping Hilda with her salon reopening. Ignacio ends up having a heart attack and Betty doesn’t even find out till much later since she and Hilda aren’t speaking to one another. While I like that the show is expanding Betty’s career, I hope the show stops this storyline soon. One of the best parts of the show is Betty and her family. I think the show will lose a lot if they start fazing out that part of the show. On top of that, they better not even think about killing Ignacio since at this point killing off the main characters father is starting too get old since everyone does it so they can make a character grow up. While Ignacio doesn’t do a ton on the show, I think the show would miss the character if they did end up writing the character of the show.
Finally Daniel and Wilhelmina are both in a predicament since Wilhelmina wants Connor, and Daniel wants Molly. It turns out that the two end up helping each other out and they both get what they want. Molly calls off the engagement and hooks up with Daniel. Connor does the same with Wilhelmina. At this point I have to say that I am happy with the storyline. I like that Daniel might actually get a long term girlfriend while Connor is really humanizing the Wilhelmina character. I want Wilhelmina to always have a little evil side to her character but her character got way too far out of hand at times in the past.
Quotes:
Wilhelmina (to the staff): “If we do, one of you die.”
Wilhelmina: “Can I help it my balls are bigger than his?”
Daniel (after Betty dances): “I told you not to do that again.”
Marc: “Can I change seats?”
Marc: “You’re the Bettynator.”
Wilhelmina: “Stop hinting Marc. You’re not invited.”
Wilhelmina: “Friendship is the oldest trick in the book.”
