TV’s Best (March 5th, 2009)

While last night didn’t have as many shows on as we are accustomed to, there were some pretty good episodes. From a great Burn Notice season finale, to a surprisingly good Ugly Betty there were still some good television to be had last night. It’s too bad that The Office dropped the ball with it’s outdated Valentine’s Day episode.

You can definitely tell that Burn Notice wanted to end the season with a bang. With car explosions, car chases, shootouts, helicopter jumping, and even some closure; there really wasn’t much that you could complain about. While I wish the episode would have had more of a cliffhanger finale ( I personally wanted to see Michael’s father being the person responsible for him being burned) last night’s episode was still a great episode and a great wrap up to a great season.

I think we will see some new things next season. It appears that the series is going to take a step back from Michael’s quest to find those responsible for getting him burned. The show appears likely to focus more on people that hold a grudge against Michael. I personally welcome this change since I actually thought the season long mysteries have actually been the weakest parts of Burn Notice the past two seasons.

One word perfectly describes this week’s episode, predictable. The episode was pretty good but I pretty much predicted everything that happened before it did. Ignacio and Frankie’s cooking battle was pretty funny (especially the trash talking and opening lineups) but I knew Ignacio would end up losing. I also guess it didn’t hurt that I already knew that Matt was really wealthy and I knew he was going to try and bail out the family.

While on the topic of Matt, I am really starting to like the relationship. I doubt the relationship will last though since I think the show will probably end up getting Betty and Daniel together (which I personally wouldn’t like). At least the Matt/Betty relationship should be a pretty interesting as long as it lasts.

The one thing I really didn’t care for was the government bailout storyline. I don’t know if it is just me but I am sick and tired of hearing about all the economic troubles. I watch television in order to get away from the troubles in the world. While I can see the show wanting to stay current by referencing current events, the storyline was pretty stupid in my opinion. Why in the world would the government bail out a fashion magazine that was just robbed by their former CFO? If the magazine went under some people would lose their jobs but I think the government has bigger problems than the fate of a fashion magazine.

I am really starting to like the duo tribe alliance.  It truly is a brilliant idea since if no one finds out about it until a couple weeks into the merge, the four members will be almost assured of making the final four since they can catch players by surprise and also have two secret hidden immunities if they need them. If next week’s promo isn’t deceiving us it doesn’t sound like the alliance will last too much longer though. Hopefully CBS is just trying to trick us since the four members are some of my favorite contestants on the show this season.

On the other hand Coach and Sandy are driving me crazy. They are both annoying and think a little too highly of themselves. At least one of them are now gone. I hope Coach’s days are numbered as well.

Last night’s episode of the Office was solid but I have to say that NBC really blew it by waiting this long to show the episode. Common sense would tell you that if you have a holiday episode, you should show the episode as close to the holiday as possible. Well for some reason NBC decided not to use common sense (even deciding to delay the episode for repeats) because they ended up showing a Valentine’s Day episode weeks after the holiday passed.

I don’t know if it is just me but if holiday episodes aren’t actually shown around their respective holidays, I think it is kind of a waste. Once the holiday has passed who wants to see an episode several weeks later about the holiday. It really takes you out of the mood of the episode.
