Regular readers of this blog should know that I am far from a huge fan of both the crime and medical drama. When the first season of Third Watch was released I was pleasently surprised by the series. Third Watch worked because while it followed the crime and medical dramas pretty closely, I loved the fact that Third Watch was a fast paced show. Now with the second season out on dvd I once again was surprised by this series.
For those of you who have never seen Third Watch before; the series follows the police, firefighters and paramedics that work the 3-11 PM shift in New York. The series follows live on and off the job.
As I already mentioned, what I really like about Third Watch is the fact that the show keeps up the pace throughout the episode. While Third Watch is not highly original in regards to it’s genres, the pace does a great job of overcoming those problems. The high pace rarely becomes a problem and is one of the things that are truly unique about Third Watch.
In comparison to the first season I really wouldn’t say there is much difference in regards to quality. The first and second seasons are both good seasons of television. If you have never watched Third Watch before I would recommend that you check out the first season before even though I don’t think it is that necessary. For the most part you won’t miss out on a whole lot except for some character development.
One thing about this dvd set that really disappointed me was the special features. I can understand a lack of special features for an older series but Third Watch began in 2000. I think a lot more special features could have been added to this dvd set. Fans of the series would have appreciated some behind the scenes features. Fans end up only getting a gag reel. The lack of special features isn’t a deal breaker but it is a disappointment.
While Third Watch isn’t perfect, it is a very good crime/medical drama. A lack of special features is a disappointment but fans of the series should definitely look into picking up the second season of Third Watch on dvd. Fans of medical dramas and crime dramas should also enjoy Third Watch since it is a well written show with non stop action.
