If you read my review of the first season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager you should know that I am not a huge fan of the series. While it is not a terrible show, I think the series had a lot of work to do in order to become anything more than a very average teen drama. With the second season now out on DVD, did the show make the necessary changes that I felt needed to be made? Unfortunately The Secret Life of the American Teenager fell short once again.

For those of you who haven’t seen the first season I would recommend watching it before checking out the second season. If you are a big fan of teen dramas I would recommend you give the show a chance. You can also read the the rest of this review since it won’t contain any spoilers on either season one or two.

For those who haven’t read my review of the first season I will quickly recap the problems with the series that I mentioned earlier. My biggest problems essentially come down to one simple fact. Besides three or four characters I could really care less about the rest of the cast. I just found the majority of the characters lacking any real depth (besides Amy, her family and Ben) so I really could care less about their storylines.

I was hoping that the second season would correct most of these problems but I was disappointed. I still really don’t care much for a majority of the cast and I don’t think that is going to change anytime soon. That is really the only problem I have with the series but it is a pretty series problem when almost half of the characters are boring.

If you can get past the lack of quality supporting characters I think you could enjoy The Secret Life of the American Teenager quite a bit. It was just hard for me to get past this large problem. Amy, her family and Ben were pretty much the only things that save the series from being a below average teen drama.

As far as special features I have to say that while there are a couple of special features, and I really didn’t find any of them to be that special. I would only recommend them to huge fans of the series. The special features are as follows:

  • Music Video-”Secret Life (You and Me)” Performed by The Strange Familiar
  • Character Secrets-The Cast Reveals All
  • Cast Close-Ups-Visit the Set As the Cast Dishes in a Series of Personal Videos

While I found most of the cast boring, there is some redeeming qualities that end up making The Secret Life of the American Teenager a very average teen drama. If you are a fan of the series or a big fan of the teen drama genre I would recommend giving the second season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager a chance.
