Catching up on the first season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager on dvd, I had some reservations about the show. I liked Amy, Ben, and their friends and family. I pretty much disliked the rest of the cast though. As a matter of fact, Amy and Ben were one of the only reasons I continued to watch the rest of the first season. So with the second season did things really change? Not really.

In my opinion the show still has the same problems it had in the first season. Besides Amy, Ben and their friends and family; I could really care less for the rest of the characters. While none of the characters really got a whole lot of time in this week’s episode, I can tell things aren’t really going to change this season and it appears that the characters will continue to be their stereotypical selves.

What disappoints me about the show is that the show was willing to take the chance and tell the story of a teenager who got pregnant at 15. This risk actually paid off quite a bit since the storyline is actually quite interesting. What annoys me though is that the show decided to just take one risk and then be conservative in every other way. If only the show could have actually added some other interesting characters outside the major two and the show could have actually been something more than your typical teen drama.

Enough ranting about my beliefs of the weaknesses of the show. Let’s actually talk about tonight’s episode. I thought the episode was pretty average. Obviously the main storyline in this week’s episode was Ben and Amy’s wedding. After getting fake ids in order to get married, the whole school ends up finding out about the marriage and yet none of Amy’s or Ben’s parents find out about it. I wonder how that happened.

While I think it will provide for an interesting storyline, I don’t think the marriage was a good idea. Obviously Ben and Amy won’t last since everyone knows marriages rarely work in the world of television. This disappoints me since it appears that Ben and Amy’s relationship won’t be lasting much longer especially after seeing the preview for the rest of the season. I don’t know if it is just me but if the show breaks up Ben and Amy they are making a huge mistake. I don’t know why you would get rid of one of the only interesting storylines the show has to offer.

Other than the wedding, there wasn’t a whole lot else to the episode. The two other bright spots of the episode were George deciding to turn the garage into his apartment and Tom falling in love with his “new friend”. Other than that there was the boring storyline of Adrian’s mother having diner with her father (I honestly don’t really care about her). There was also the fact that Ricky and Grace went on their first “date” (I don’t really care about that either).

While I know that the writers and directors of The Secret Life of the American Teenager won’t read this but I have two suggestions for them. First don’t break up Ben and Amy since that is currently one of the only bright spots on the show right now and I think it would just be stupid to break them up. Second, get some more interesting characters or give the current characters an actual personality that is unique.

Quotes:

George: “So you’re now a detective and a philosopher?”

Kathleen: “That’s right Tom. You can’t go out with an internet prostitute.”

Grace (talking about her date with Ricky): “He wouldn’t take me to his own wedding would he?”

Anne: “You can’t turn the garage into your apartment.”
