Last summer, ABC Family premiered a little show called The Middleman. The Middleman was a quirky little show based on a comic book. Not surprisingly The Middleman didn’t last long. It ended up getting 12 episodes and then was promptly canceled by ABC Family. If you never watched the series you can now check it out on dvd and unless you hate sci-fi/comic books you must check out The Middleman.

The Middleman focuses on a secret organization that fights against all the quirky villians, aliens, and creatures of the world that you would generally associate with comic books. The Middleman is joined by Wendy (his new protégé) and her friends.

In my opinion the Middleman is one of the best new shows of last year. While it was quirky and strange most of the time, that is exactly why I loved the show. I like shows that never take themselves too seriously. While it only lasted 12 episodes, I believe I will never forget the series just because I don’t know if I will ever see a quirkier show. While the Middleman wasn’t the best show, unless you totally despise quirky shows it is hard not to love the Middleman. As long as you can stand the fact that the show is nowhere near realistic you should love the show.

Besides the quirkiness, I loved the characters of The Middleman. The Middleman alone was a classic character. A secret agent that drinks milk while beating up bad guys and refuses to swear. How could you not love the character?  Even though The Middleman kind of steals the show, Wendy still is a great character. Bring in the other supporting characters and quirky weekly characters and you couldn’t ask for a better cast for the show.

As far as special features I have to say that I am satisfied. For a show that only lasted 12 episodes, this dvd set has quite a few special features. One problem though is that some of the special features aren’t really that interesting. The auditions, table read, and photo gallery are kind of boring. Some of the other special features including the web featurettes are quite good. Overall I don’t think they are worthy of a separate purchase but they are worth watching if you are a fan of the series.

As I mentioned earlier, I thought the Middleman was a great show. It’s too bad that the series only lasted 12 episodes. I wish everyone would have loved the show as much as I did but that is obviously not the case or the show wouldn’t have been canceled. If you don’t like quirky shows or sci-fi shows the Middleman is not for you. If you generally like sci-fi/quirky shows though I think you will enjoy the Middleman. I would recommend a purchase to you along with fans of the series.
