Lucille Ball made her name known with the I Love Lucy show. After I Love Lucy left the airwaves, it took around a decade for Lucille Ball to return to television in another series. That series was called the Lucy Show.
The Lucy Show followed Lucy in her new role as Lucy Carmichael who was widowed with two children. Joining her was her best friend Vivian Bagley and her son. In Lucy’s usual manner she couldn’t stay out of trouble and her hijinks continued in every episode.
Overall I can’t say that I am a huge Lucille Ball fan. As a matter of fact I really have never watched an I Love Lucy episode that closely. I just was never interested in watching the show. As far as The Lucy Show is concerned, I would say it was a very average show. From what I can tell most people didn’t think it was quite as good as I Love Lucy. The Lucy Show is quite a bit like I Love Lucy since it has similar humor revolving around Lucy always getting into trouble.
For those of you who don’t know, The Lucy Show is in Black and White so don’t expect the highest video quality on this dvd set. There is really only so much you can do to improve black and white picture. The dvds do contain 30 episodes though which is a good thing since you don’t see that many episodes in a dvd set very often.
Overall fans of the show cannot complain about the special features included in this dvd set. For a show that is over 40 years old and is in black and white, you couldn’t ask for more as far as special features. They aren’t the greatest special features ever but fans of the show should find some of them quite entertaining. With many older shows not getting any special features on their dvd sets, you have to applaud this dvd set including 11 special features.
Your enjoyment of the first season of The Lucy Show comes down to whether you are a fan of the series or 1960s comedies. If neither describe you, I would pass. If either do describe you though I think a purchase is warranted.
