Need a vacation without spending a lot of money? How about joining the crew of the Pacific Princess for a voyage between California and Mexico? Well you can now join the crew of the Pacific Princess for the first 13 episodes of the second season with the newly released DVD set The Love Boat Season Two Volume One.

For those of you who have never seen the Love Boat (myself included before receiving a screener for the second volume of the first season awhile ago) the Love Boat was a long running series during the 1970’s and 1980’s. It is kind of a romantic drama/comedy mix since the boat is a love cruise and the crew tries to help the couples on the boat get through their problems. The show was before my time so that is probably why I think The Love Boat is overrated.

Maybe it was just that the show hasn’t translated well over time, but I really didn’t find the show to be that funny and the storylines are a little outdated. Some shows hold up better over time than other shows. In my opinion The Love Boat didn’t hold up that well over time.

Even though the show really wasn’t for me, it doesn’t mean that no one will like the show. If you enjoyed the show when it aired on ABC I can’t imagine you not liking the show today. You can also relive some of your favorite episodes. Also if you are a fan of 1970’s/1980’s television you also have a pretty good chance of enjoying the Love Boat if you have never seen the show before.

Even though the storylines are a little outdated, I have to admit that the video quality of the DVDs are surprisingly good especially since the episodes on this DVD set are over 30 years old. The picture quality is not perfect and you will get better quality with more recent shows, but you really can’t be disappointed with the video quality of the DVD set as long as you take into consideration that the show is 30 years old.

One thing that did disappoint me about the DVD set, is that there wasn’t much effort put into the special features. You do get episodic promos (commercials advertising for the episodes) but who really cares about episodic promos. They might amuse you for a while but they aren’t much especially since they are the only special feature in the DVD set.

So even though I didn’t think the Love Boat was great show, I do recognize that some people will enjoy this set. If you are either a fan of the series or a fan of shows from the 1970’s and 1980’s I would recommend that you pick up Volume One of the Second season of The Love Boat.
