When “The Big Bang Theory” premiered in September 2007, I was one of the first TV critics to praise it. I got a screener of the pilot episode and while most other critics gave the show a lukewarm review, I loved it from the very beginning. It helps that I am a complete nerd and share more than a few things with the characters on the show. From its premiere, “The Big Bang Theory” has been my second favorite comedy (”How I Met Your Mother” is my favorite).

If you’ve never seen “The Big Bang Theory,” it’s more of a sitcom than most of the recent comedies to hit the airwaves. Chuck Lorre is behind it and you can definitely see a little bit of “Two and a Half Men” in the show (though in my opinion “The Big Bang Theory” is much, much funnier). The main focus is on a group of four nerds and a hot girl that moves in next door to two of them. Some of the comedy is pretty much for nerds only (references to geeky shows and movies and science jokes that may go over the head of non-scientists) but the majority of it is humor that will appeal to all audiences.

Most people think that Jim Parsons who plays the socially clueless Sheldon, is one of the only reasons the show is any good. I personally disagree with that assessment. While Parsons should have been nominated for an Emmy this year, the rest of the cast is good in their own way. While Johnny Galecki (Leonard) may not get as many laughs, he’s just as good an actor as Parsons in my opinion. Kaley Cuoco is a young comedy veteran who always turns in a good performance. There really isn’t a weak link in the cast.

“The Big Bang Theory” is just a sitcom so video quality isn’t really one of the most important aspects of this DVD. However, the video is very clear and colorful with no real issues whatsoever. The audio is also good though outside of the incredible theme song by the Barenaked Ladies, there isn’t really a lot of music in the series. The focus is more on the dialog which comes in loud and clear.

There are only a few extras on “The Big Bang Theory: The Complete 2nd Season” but the ones offered are pretty solid. They are:

  • “Physicist to the Stars”-Over ten minutes with Professor David Saltzberg, the real-life physicist who is a science consultant for the show. This feature also include small interview snippets from the cast and crew talking about the science of the show. This is definitely the best of the three features on the set mainly because its original.
  • “Testing the Infinite Hilarity Hypothesis in Relation to The Big Bang Theory” (15:30)-Pretty much a general overview of the show with the cast talking about the changes in their characters. Nothing special here but its probably at least worth watching.
  • Gag Reel (8:50)-There are a few funny mistakes here but like most gag reels, there are more misses than hits.

“The Big Bang Theory” is a great sitcom that all nerds and comedy fans should definitely pick up. Season two is just as good as (or maybe even better than) the premiere season. Highly recommended.
