I got my first taste of “Star Trek” when the reboot launched last weekend and loved every moment of it. I’ve always wanted to watch the older shows and movies but I never really had time. The new film gave me the push I needed to start watching some of the older material and I started with these “best of” collections I was sent to review. I loved every episode.
Episodes included on “The Best of Star Trek”:
- “The City on the Edge of Forever”-The gang is transported to the 1930’s and Kirk falls in love with a doomed peace activist.
- “The Trouble with Tribbles”-I wasn’t a “Star Trek” fan before last weekend but even I had heard of the famous tribbles episode. In the episode, Uhura buys one of the small furry pets but they quickly begin to multiple in the Enterprise.
- “Balance of Terror”-The crew battles the Romulans for the first time and due to their close resemblance to Vulcans, some crew members start to distrust Spock.
- “Amok Time”-Spock must mate or die but when he finds his bride, she chooses Kirk as her champion and the two must fight to the death.
Episodes included on “The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation”:
- “The Best of Both Worlds (Part 1)”-The Borg take over the Enterprise and abduct Captain Picard.
- “The Best of Both Worlds (Part 2)”-The conclusion to the epic storyline.
- “Yesterday’s Enterprise”-The Enterprise jumps 22 years into the future where it encounters a new version of the ship which is at war with the Klingons.
- “The Measure of a Man”-Picard fights for Data’s rights after he is told Data is just Starfleet property.
Obviously the main audience for both of these releases is new fans that loved the just-released film and want to see if the older shows are worth watching. For that audience, $9.99 for 4 great episodes is a very good price for a way to try the show before committing a lot of money to the pricey season sets. These sets are also good for those who already know they like the “Star Trek” series but don’t need every episode and can live with just a few of the best episodes the series has to offer. If you don’t fit into either of those two groups, I would probably just save your money and wait to buy the season sets.
(for those looking to try the series before buying the season sets and those who don’t need every episode of the series)
(everyone else)
