After opening the gates to hell in the second season finale, Sam and Dean are back to make things right. Dean has only one year left to live (due to the deal that he made with the crossroads demon) and tries to make the most of it while still fighting the forces of evil. Meanwhile Sam tries to find a way to save his brother from his unfortunate fate.
When Supernatural began three years ago I was a little disappointed. I thought the show just wasn’t as interesting as I thought it would be. Then the second season rolled around the corner and I was surprised since the show started to get everything going and the show improved to the point that it is one of the better sci-fi/supernatural shows on television. Much like the second season, I thought the third season of Supernatural was very good as well.
For those of you not familiar with the show, Supernatural pretty much has a weekly supernatural case along with a season long story arc. Each episode involves Sam and Dean hunting down a new demon in order to keep the world safe. The third season also brings the story of trying to save Dean from his eventual fate.
Overall I like the episode structure of Supernatural. The only problem with Supernatural’s episode structure is that there is the tendency for the show to have some bad episodes. While there isn’t a lot of them there are a couple each season. This structure also leads to some really good episodes as well. This season in particular had quite a few good episodes. The following episodes in particular were the best of the season in my opinion: Bad Day At Black Rock (when good luck becomes bad luck), Bedtime Stories (these stories aren’t for your children), A Very Supernatural Christmas (what’s a better way to spread Christmas cheer than to kill Anti Claus), Mystery Spot (Sam lives his own version of Groundhog Day), and Ghostfacers! (it’s Ghost Hunters with much more dangerous ghosts). Overall there were more episodes in season three that I enjoyed than ones I didn’t.
One thing I have to bring up though is that Supernatural had a shorter season last year due to the writer’s strike. The third season of Supernatural actually only had 16 episodes. While it would have been nice to have a full season I don’t think the shortened season really hurts this Blu-Ray set.
Since this is a Blu-Ray set you are obviously wondering whether it pays to buy the Blu-Ray version or stick with the DVD version. While the Blu-Ray version does look better than the DVD version I would have to say that the Blu-Ray version is not a necessary purchase. The picture and audio is better than the DVD version but that is all you get in the Blu-Ray version. Unless the video and audio upgrade is worth it for you I would probably recommend that you just stick with the DVD version since it is cheaper and you are only missing out on a little better video and audio quality.
As far as the special features are concerned I thought they were pretty average. They weren’t bad but I really didn’t find any of them as must watches. First there is A Closer Look which are a bunch of small features on most episodes that bring up unique information about each episode. Then there is a gag reel which is pretty self explanatory. The Supernatual Impala Featurette is all about the brother’s car and the gun cache in the trunk. This is a pretty good special feature but it is only around 3 minutes long. Then there is From Legends to Reality. This special feature is around 17 minutes and it goes through how several of the special effects from the season were made. Finally there is the Ghostfacers! Confessionals Minifeaturette Gallery. This special feature I was most disappointed with. I really liked the Ghostfacers episode but this special feature was pretty stupid as it was just some interviews with the guys from Ghostfacers as they were trying to pitch their show to a tv station. While the special features weren’t bad I wouldn’t say that they are worth buying the Blu-Ray set for.
Overall I thought Supernatural The Complete Third Season was good. I thought the season was strong with a lot of good episodes. As far as recommending the set to people there are a couple groups that I would have no problem recommending this set to. First if you are a fan of the show and have seen all the episodes already you might want to re-watch the episodes. If you are a fan of the show but haven’t seen the third season yet I would definitely recommend you pick up the third season since it is just as good as the other seasons. Finally if you are a sci-fi/supernatural fan but haven’t seen the show yet I would recommend you pick up the first season. If you enjoy the first season I would recommend you pick up the second and third season. As far as Blu-Ray vs DVD is concerned it all comes down to how important video and audio quality is since that is the only difference between the two. As far as I am concerned I enjoyed the set and thought it was well worth watching.
