Supernatural has always been a very peculiar show. Very few shows are able to get better each and every season. Supernatural has succeeded on getting better from seasons one through three. So the fourth season came around this past year and the show made some pretty big changes. The good news is that once again Supernatural improved upon the previous season.
For those of you who have not seen the third season yet there will be a couple very slight spoilers in the next paragraph so you might want to skip the next paragraph if you don’t want to be spoiled. If you are not caught up to the third season I would recommend that you pick up the seasons that you have seen since Supernatural is a pretty serialized series.
Now for those of you who have seen the first three seasons, the fourth season picks up where the third season left off. After being dragged to hell in the season three finale, Dean returns to Earth with an important mission. The Winchester boys have faced some tough challenges in the past, but nothing compares to them trying to stop the apocalypse and destruction of the world.
As I have already mentioned, I believe the fourth season of Supernatural is actually the best season of Supernatural to date. While it is not considerably better than the other seasons, I would still consider it a little better than the first three seasons. The season had a couple off episodes but qhat I really liked about the fourth season was the twist that was revealed in the first episode of the season. Without spoiling it for those of you who haven’t seen the season yet, the twist changes a lot about Supernatural and it puts an endgame into place which should make the rest of the series as long as it isn’t extended too long.
The season itself is great but what about the special features? I really wouldn’t say they exceed expectations but they also don’t really disappoint. They are pretty solid overall. They are not worth a purchase of the DVD set themselves but if you plan on picking up the DVD set anyway you should check them out. Here is a quick look at what you can expect as far as the special features:
- Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell Mythologies- These include seven features that detail some of the mythology behind the heaven, purgatory, and hell topics covered in the series and this season in particular. It was pretty interesting to find out how much the writers on Supernatural actually stuck to religious texts and characters of mythology. The problem though is that the feature is very “technical” and for the most part feels like a lecture you might hear if you were taking a class on religion. If you aren’t really interested in learning about different religions and their thoughts on heaven, purgatory and hell you probably wouldn’t be too interested in this special feature.
- Eric Kripke commentaries on three episodes-Pretty much your typical episode commentaries. I personally am not a huge fan of commentaries.
- Extended/Unaired Scenes-Pretty much your typical deleted scenes. You could tell for the most part why these scenes didn’t make the show.
- Gag Reel-While a gag reel is far from a unique special feature, Supernatural’s is quite good. It’s longer than most, and the outtakes are generally funnier than those of most other shows.
If you couldn’t already tell at this point, I would definitely recommend picking up the fourth season of Supernatural unless you don’t like the series or the sci fi genre. The special features aren’t worth a purchase by themselves but if you combine them with the great fourth season, this is a great DVD set.
