Earlier this year, I received “Skins: Volume 1″ for review and liked it quite a bit. Thus, it shouldn’t surprise you that I thought Volume 2 was pretty much exactly as good as the first set. However, as I warned in my previous review this show really isn’t for the “Gossip Girl” crowd. Sure it is a teen drama but it is rated TV-MA for a reason. Almost every episode has foul language (including F-bombs), sex, nudity, alcohol, and drugs.
“Skins” features a group of teens who are much more real than their American TV counterparts. I’m not going to spoil what happens in the first set of episodes since the show is highly serialized and if you haven’t already seen volume one you should pick it up before buying volume two. Just think of it as “Gossip Girl” without American television regulations standing in its way. I don’t usually like more mature shows but in this case, it’s actually a bit refreshing to see teens act more realistically. If I had teenage kids, I probably wouldn’t let them see it though.
British shows usually pale in comparison to American shows in the video and audio department. However, this set actually looks and sounds pretty good overall. The quality still isn’t as good as shows like “Gossip Girl” but it’s definitely passable. The first set had music replacement issues but since I still don’t get BBC America, I have no clue what (if anything) has changed in volume two. Those of you who hate buying shows with new music might want to research this a bit more before buying.
“Skins” is definitely worth buying if you like edgy dramas. The show is serialized though so if you haven’t watched the first volume yet, don’t buy volume two until you do. Recommended.
