When hearing that the Muppets were going to be making an appearance on Scrubs, for some reason I was anticipating the episode. I thought the episode could be a classic wacky Scrubs episode. I thought how in the world could adding the Muppets for an episode not be hilarious. Well my expectations were wrong. While the episode was not nearly as funny as it could have been, the episode was more of an emotional episode than I had imagined.
This week’s storyline focused on three storylines.
One storyline focussed on Katie and Elliot. Elliot sees a lot of herself in Katie. Elliot decides to help her get a spot on Turk’s research team. Katie pretends that she is too weak and vulnerable in order to get the position herself, so Elliot gets the position for her. It turns out that Katie was playing Elliot the whole time. What bugged me about this storyline was that it really showed that this week’s episode was originally intended to be the first episode of the season. Obviously if this episode was aired in order, Elliot should have already known that Katie was manipulative.
The second storyline focused on JD trying to teach Denise how to be compassionate with patients. Denise doesn’t seem to really care what her patients think of her. With the help of Elmo (who in my opinion seemed attracted to Katie) JD hopes that he was actually able to get her to be compassionate but he failed once again. While I thought this storyline has been pretty good so far, I sure hope the show doesn’t keep this storyline the rest of the season. It is going to get old eventually so hopefully the storyline is finished before it becomes old.
Finally Dr. Cox debates why he hates Ed. Ed is a good doctor and he really doesn’t do anything to annoy Dr. Cox. Dr. Cox realizes that Ed is throwing away his potential though since he is too lazy to give the extra effort to truly be a great doctor.
While the Muppets didn’t bring as much humor as I thought they would, I thought they were a pretty good addition to the episode. From the x-ray with the hand up one of the Muppets to one of the Muppets being shot accross the hospital from one of Todd’s high fives, there was still some humor to be had.
Quotes:
JD: “I grew up on the street. Sesame Street.”
JD (to Turk): “Are you also having Muppet visions?”
JD: “What is Elmo? A seal?”
Elliot: “We like to call each other Skank.”
