Story
Tom Stark is your typical millionaire. He lives for money and is not afraid to use all the wealth he has accumulated. After being captured in Iraq things change drastically for Tom. Tom creates his own suit of armor and vows to save the world from the villains of the world. When he learns of a plot to put the whole world in danger he dons his outfit and proves that heroes can be built instead of being born.
Before watching Iron Man this summer I really didn’t know a whole lot about the franchise. As a matter of fact, the only reason why I watched the movie in the first place was because of the high ratings from critics and moviegoers. After watching the movie in theaters I was glad that I saw the movie since to this day it is the best movie of 2008 and will most likely go down as the best movie of 2008 in my opinion.
While the movie was a little long there really wasn’t anything else to complain about. There was the perfect mix of great action, sci-fi, and humor to make this one of the best superhero movies of all time in my opinion. Combine that with great acting and I don’t know how anyone could complain about the story. If you are a fan of superhero, sci-fi, or action movies and didn’t see Iron Man in the theater, you’re in for a treat since you will be able to see a great movie on dvd or blu-ray.
Visuals
Watching Iron Man in the theaters I could tell that this was an amazing looking film. The visuals and special effects are top notch and they translate magnificently to DVD. This is actually one of the best looking DVDs I have ever seen. Since I didn’t receive the Blu-ray version I can’t judge the visuals of the Blu-ray but from past experience I have to say that the movie probably looks downright amazing in Blu-ray.
Special Features
There is really only one word to describe the special features in the Two-Disc Collector’s Edition, WOW. The special features in this special edition are downright amazing. I don’t know if I have seen more special features packed into a special edition. As the box is all to willing to point out, there are over four hours of special features. They aren’t lying either. This DVD along with it’s special features could easily suck up a whole afternoon.
Obviously there are a lot of special features but you are probably wondering about the quality. The quality is top notch as well. If you are a fan of the movie and/or an Iron Man fan I can’t imagine you not absolutely loving the special features on this dvd set. While most dvds have some weak special features that isn’t a problem with this dvd set. I really wasn’t disappointed by a single special feature. Since there are so many special features I have decided to just give you a list of everything you can expect on this dvd.
Disc One
- The Film
- Deleted Scenes-Around 10 scenes that aren’t terrible including an extended ending sequence.
- A preview of a new Iron Man cartoon.
Disc Two
- I am Iron Man-A seven part documentary that takes a behind the scenes look at making the movie. Topping in at around an hour and a half (and yes I am being serious) you won’t be disappointed with this feature.
- The Invincible Iron Man-A 6 part documentary that takes a look at Iron Man’s past and is great for people that weren’t familiar with Iron Man before the movie. At around 40 minutes you will almost learn everything you could ever ask for in regards to Iron Man.
- Wired-A 27 minute look at how the special features were created.
- Robert Downey Jr. Screen Test-A six minute look at Robert Downey Jr.’s audition for the part of Iron Man.
- The Actor’s Process-A four minute look at the actors preparing for a scene.
- The Onion “Wildly Popular Iron Man Trailer To Be Adapted Into Full Length Film”-A two and a half minute comedic piece by the onion making fun of how excited people got over the Iron Man trailer.
- Photo Galleries-A typical photo gallery.
Final Thoughts
At this point Iron Man is my favorite movie of the year so it should come as no surprise that I thought the DVD was amazing. Unless you hated the movie, superhero movies, or action movies in general I can’t imagine you not liking Iron Man. Since there is three versions of the movie I have some specific recommendations for people. If you have a Blu-ray player you need to pick up the Blu-ray version since I think it would look amazing in HD. If you don’t have a Blu-ray player it mostly comes down to how much you like special features. If you don’t like special features you might as well just pick up the normal version. If you like special features you can’t go wrong with the 2 disc special collector’s edition. With that said I have to recommend this DVD to almost everyone since it could easily be the best new DVD of the year.
