Stand-up comedy is very subjective and because of that, it makes it hard to recommend DVDs to specific groups of people. Luckily, “Christopher Titus: Love Is Evol” is so funny that I have no problem recommending it for just about anyone. I had never seen Titus perform before but it is clear from this special that he is a very funny man. He also has a great personality that is almost impossible not to like.
As you may have guessed from the title, this special is almost exclusively about the subject of love. Titus talks about his divorce, the lack of love his parents had for one another, and his new relationship. Most of the special is extremely dark since Titus has had a lot of bad experiences with love. However, when he moves on to his new relationship his style does a 180 degree switch to very light material. He is just as good with his light humor so this is definitely not a problem.
When I watch some of these comedy specials, I barely manage one or two chuckles throughout the whole routine. While watching this one, I was laughing out loud almost every minute. In addition, I was pleased that Titus’s material wasn’t as mature as some other comics. There are a few f-bombs (I counted three but there could be more) but overall, the material isn’t that raunchy. This is a very good thing for someone like me who doesn’t like hearing an F-bomb every other minute but I know there are some of you out there that prefer comics with filthy mouths. If that’s you, you might want to pass on this DVD.
Video quality is excellent with absolute no dirt and a very clean and crisp image. Audio is also perfect. In terms of extras, you are getting about 43 extra minutes of material compared to the version that aired on Comedy Central. Also included is a somewhat funny two-minute look at Titus’s photo shoot, a five-minute feature where regular people share their tales of heartbreak, and a 14-minute “Countdown to V-Day” feature where Titus shares some not so great love advice. The 43 or so minutes of extra material is obviously the best feature but the other three are worth watching as well.
Unless you already know you don’t like Titus’s material, I definitely would recommend that you give this DVD a try. Titus is a very funny and likable guy that had me laughing quite a bit. Highly recommended.
