Before watching this stand-up special on DVD I had only seen Carlos Mencia on a few episodes of his show (”Mind of Mencia”). I generally enjoyed those episodes but I was a little disappointed with this comedy special. I thought it was just average but I know comedy is subjective and I’m sure a lot of people will love this DVD.
In this 66-minute stand-up special, Mencia takes on a lot of controversial subjects. He tackles Barack Obama, his real feelings on the N-word, gays in the military, and many other issues. As a white male, I personally really didn’t identify with any of the subject material and that is probably part of the reason I thought the DVD was just average.
Mencia is very charismatic and never really stops moving. I do like his physical comedy but I’ve never really been a fan of controversial material. I know a lot of people enjoy that type of comedy but I’ve just never really gotten it. It’s not that I find it offensive, I just don’t think that type of humor is funny. If you do like controversial comedy, Mencia is definitely a comedian you’ll enjoy.
Other than the comedy, there really isn’t much to review with these stand-up comedy DVDs. Video and audio quality are always great. There are usually very few bonus features. “Performance Enhanced” at least has two special features. Mencia’s appearance on “Cribs” was a nice addition but the segment from “Mind of Mencia” was little more than an advertisement for his show.
Overall, if you like Mencia’s comedy or controversial humor I’m sure you’ll enjoy this DVD. If not, I probably wouldn’t bother with it.
