Stand-up comedy is very subject and incredibly hard to predict who will enjoy what. While I enjoyed the last Comedy Central special sent to me (John Oliver: Terrifying Times), I didn’t find “Brian Regan: The Epitome of Hyperbole” to be funny at all. This doesn’t mean that Regan isn’t a great comedian, he just isn’t my style. I’m sure many of you out there will love him and think I was crazy for liking John Oliver. That’s just the way stand-up comedy is.
In this special that just aired on Comedy Central over the weekend, Regan “exposes the truth behind physics, discusses the stupidest crimes, and offers his suggestions on how to improve the opera.” He moves around quite a bit and tackles a lot of different subjects. His comedy is rather broad and clean and seems to be intended for a very wide audience. He also uses a lot of expressions and physical humor. Like I said earlier, I didn’t think he was particularly funny but I’m sure a lot of you out there will disagree.
There are no problems with the audio or video quality at all. I’m sure some people will be upset by the fact that there are no chapter selections but seeing as the DVD is only 42 minutes long to begin with, I didn’t mind. As for the extras, “The Encore” (3:52) is just two extra jokes from Regan. Neither are particularly funny. “The Backstage Story” is an almost 14-minute look at the stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Since there aren’t many stand-up “making of” featurettes, it is quite original but unless you liked Regan’s act it probably doesn’t pay to watch it.
The decision on whether to purchase this DVD comes down to only one thing. Do you like Brian Regan? If you do, you’ll obviously love his new stand-up special. If you haven’t see him perform but enjoy most clean and very broad comedians, the DVD may be worth a look. Unfortunately, I didn’t really enjoy the act and my low grade reflects that.
