I’ve probably reviewed ten of these “Alvin and the Chipmunks” releases by now and I had the same reaction to every one of them. These discs are good for children but parents and other adults will probably just think they are average at best. Unsurprisingly, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk” is exactly like the other releases in the series.
Even though this release is called “The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk,” only one of the episodes focuses on the holiday. The five episodes in this release are:
- “The Easter Chipmunk”-Alvin finds out that his grandpa was the original Easter Chipmunk and tries to sue the Easter Bunny for copyright infringement.
- “Snow Wrong”-The chipmunks audition to be in a “Snow White” play.
- “Special Kind of Champion”-When Alvin can’t keep up with the rest of his track team, his coach lets him train athletes for the Special Olympics.
- “Thinking Cap Trap”-Simon invents a cap that helps the rest of his family become smarter.
- “Luck O’ The Chipmunks”-The chipmunks investigate a claim by a new boy at school that he has his own leprechaun.
These episodes aired all the way from 1984 to 1995 and there is a pretty big difference between the older episodes and the newer ones. Animation isn’t superb on any of the episodes, but it gets the job done. Obviously since the episodes aired in the ’80s and ’90s, it doesn’t compare to today’s animation but kids probably won’t mind.
Video and sound quality are both unimpressive but what do you expect from an ’80s and ’90s cartoon? Audio is a bit better than video mostly because the songs sung by the chipmunks are catchy.
Basically, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk” should only be bought by parents for their children or by those who fondly remember the show from their childhood. Other viewers will probably just think the DVD is average.
