In this set of three episodes from the “The Chipmunks Go to the Movies” series, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore tackle “Indiana Jones” (”Daytona Jones and the Pearl of Wisdom”), “Batman” (”Batmunk”), and “Robocop” (”Romomunk”).

“Daytona Jones and the Pearl of Wisdom” is mostly a parody of the first Indiana Jones movie but there are scenes from “Temple of Doom” as well (the mine cart scene in particular). In “Batmunk,” Simon gets to play Brice Wayne (aka Batmunk). All the Batmunk toys are being stolen by none other than the Jokester (Alvin). “Robomunk” features Alvin in the title role of Officer Malone. Malone gets in a terrible accident but with the help of Dr. Simonize Malone, he becomes half-robot, half-chipmunk.

All three episodes aired in 1990 and you can definitely tell that the episodes are old. The animation isn’t good at all and there doesn’t seem to have been much of an attempt to clean it up a bit. While this isn’t a deal-breaker seeing as the show is meant for kids in the first place, it is a bit disappointing. Audio quality is a little better and many of the songs sung by the chipmunks are catchy.

The episodes are fine but unless you have fond memories of watching the episodes or have young children, they definitely aren’t anything spectacular. Also, “Batmunk” was already released on “The Chipmunks Go to the Movies” DVD so if you have that release you are basically only getting two new cartoons.

For those who don’t mind the bad animation and either loved the show as a kid or would like their kids to see the series, “Daytona Jones and the Pearl of Wisdom” isn’t a bad pick up. The DVD is only $12.99 after all. However, if you can’t handle rather crude animation or don’t fit into either of the two categories, it probably isn’t worth a look.
