bigbangtheory 201 300x200 Recap The Big Bang Theory S2.E1 The Bad Fish Paradigm (September 22, 2008)

While the humor was definitely there in this episode, I wasn’t a fan of the storyline. I don’t know why shows can’t make their characters happy every so often. For relationships, instead of break-ups and make-ups, it would be really nice if a couple could grow without pointless fights that are only meant to keep two people separate. I know surveys show that married couples are boring but I don’t see it that way. Marshall and Lily on “How I Met Your Mother” have been married with very few problems but they are still incredibly funny together. I think Penny and Leonard could definitely be the same.

Penny and Leonard return from their first date. Leonard kisses her goodbye as Howard and Rajesh spy via a camera in the hall. Leonard returns to his apartment and Howard and Rajesh think his date crashed and burned. Penny did say that they should “slow down” after all. Leonard doesn’t think he did anything wrong so they go to the tape. Howard, Rajesh, and Sheldon all point out things he did wrong in the goodnight kiss alone.

Sheldon does his laundry in a very meticulous fashion, Penny enters and doesn’t care one as long as her clothes get clean. Penny confides in Sheldon. She asks him if Leonard has ever dated a regular girl (not a brainiac)? Will he get bored with her? Sheldon asks her if she likes several things but she doesn’t like any of them. Penny realizes that Leonard has no business being with a “stupid loser” like her. She tells Sheldon about the lie she told Leonard, she didn’t actually graduate from community college. She forces Sheldon to keep this secret but he doesn’t want to. He does eventually agree to do so when Penny tells him she would “die of embarrassment.”

Leonard asks Penny out but she just makes excuses. Leonard now thinks he is actually the “bad fish.” Sheldon instantly struggles to keep Penny’s secret. He struggles so much that he runs out of the apartment and interrupts Penny’s shift at the Cheesecake Factory. He asks to be released from his oath since he was even denied clearance to a secret government project because of his inability to keep a secret. Since Penny won’t let him out of his oath, Sheldon decides to move out of his apartment. Leonard wonders why but chalks it up to him going insane. Neither Howard or Rajesh want to take him in but Rajesh is forced to.

Sheldon is definitely not a good house guest. He insults one of Rajesh’s favorite actresses and is quickly kicked out. Rajesh drops him off at Howard’s but this doesn’t work either. Sheldon annoys Howard so much at night that Howard drugs him with Valium and drops him back off at his old apartment. Now that he is drugged, Sheldon quickly reveals the secret, Penny didn’t go to community college and is scared she isn’t good enough for Leonard. Leonard thinks that’s ridiculous and goes to Penny’s apartment. He drops off a brochure for a community college but says it’s fine that she isn’t smart. Penny is disgusted and Leonard knows what he did wrong this time.
