Review: This was definitely the best episode yet of “Fringe,” mainly because the show added a bit more mythology to the mix. The Observer really intrigues me. He definitely seemed extra-terrestrial but considering J.J. Abrams shows always have original ideas, I highly doubt he is actually an alien. As long as he isn’t human, I’m happy. I don’t want just fringe sciences (they will become boring within a season or two), I want aliens, monsters, and other things that can’t be described.
Recap: A bald guy watches a construction site and writes notes in a strange language (and from the right to left as well). He eats very quickly and the ground begins to shake. A building under construction explodes and a crane is destroyed. After this, he calls someone and tells them “It has arrived.”
Peter is going insane taking care of Walter. He doesn’t think he needs to be part of the team since he is a glorified babysitter. Olivia disputes this, Walter has already said he will go back to the mental institution if Peter leaves. Phillip brings the team to a warehouse. A gas mane leak caused the explosion but a mysterious cylinder was found. It came from underground and is vibrating. Also, this isn’t the first time one of these things has shown up, someone Olivia used to work with (Colonel Jacobson) worked a similar case in Quantico.
Olivia asks Jacobson about the case. He tells her that it was transmitting some sort of message. Then, after 48 hours it drove itself into the ground and disappeared. Somebody is hunting for the cylinder and he takes down the entire warehouse. Luckily, the cylinder was moved to Walter’s lab. Olivia gets an odd call that she thinks is from John. However, there is no record of the call.
Olivia looks through pictures from the old case and notices a bald guy that was also photographed at the hospital during the rapid birth investigation. She tells Phillip about her find but he already knows about him. In fact, he has been spotted at over three dozen of the Pattern related events. He has earned the nickname “The Observer” because it just appears that he watches and takes notes.
The warehouse team is found dead and the cylinder is to be moved again. Walter sends Peter away on a lab then injects Astrid with a sedative. The guy hunting for the cylinder arrives at Jacobson’s house and makes him think of Olivia. He eventually does, giving him the information he needs.
Walter goes out for a root beer float (he had been craving one) and meets with The Observer. The guy thanks Walter for hiding the beacon for him. Walter is arrested but claims that taking an hiding the cylinder was the right thing to do. He had to hide it from the guy in pursuit. He mentions his chat with The Observer to Olivia. Walter also yells at Peter for being “simple-minded” and not trusting him. This rids Peter of his guilt for leaving the team.
Peter heads back to the lab to grab his things but the hunter abducts him. He then forces him to think of where the cylinder is. Meanwhile, Olivia finds out about Peter’s abduction. Walter knows he will lead the guy right to it. The guy asks Peter to think of Walter and he gives up the location of the cylinder without even knowing where it is. The guy and Olivia both head to a graveyard where Walter buried the cylinder.
The guy gets the cylinder but Olivia chases after. She eventually hits him with her gun and the guy dies. The cylinder then plunges down into the earth as The Observer watches on. Peter sees him and attempts to knock him out. He fails and The Observer reveals that he can read Peter’s mind. The Observer then shoots Peter with a strange gun (that isn’t lethal) and he gets away.
Walter is released and tries to apologize to Astrid. She just ignores him. Peter tells Olivia that he didn’t believe in the Pattern but after his experience with The Observer, he has questions that can’t be answered. Until he can answer those questions, he isn’t leaving the team. Walter tells him that during the car accident that killed his mom, the car plunged into water but someone grabbed them and saved them both. That guy was bald with no eyebrows, just like The Observer. Walter was returning the favor by hiding the cylinder. To end the episode, Olivia sees John in her apartment, apparently alive.
