Rants and Raves (October 31st, 2008)

Rave: While some people will probably disagree (especially PETA members), I really like the addition of Owen to the cast. The reason that I like the character is that it is original. Maybe a little psychotic, maybe a little messed up, but interesting none the less. I like originality in my television characters. While I don’t think he is a regular yet, if his second episode is any indication I hope he gets picked up as a series regular.

Rant: This rant goes out to Ugly Betty which has had far from a great season. Ugly Betty just doesn’t have the magic of previous seasons. First there was the poor attempt of writing of Alexis. Now there is the terrible Lindsay Lohan storyline. Thank goodness the show cut her role on the show. Hopefully we won’t have to deal with her much longer. So far Ugly Betty has been one of the biggest disappoints so far this season. Hopefully Ugly Betty will be able to turn things around. The preview for next week’s episode could be the turnaround of the season. I don’t know how it happens but I am already thinking that Amanda becoming Betty’s roommate will lead to some hilarious moments.

Rave: Congratulations to Supernatural on a good Halloween episode. While the Halloween episode could have been better, this season is turning into a very good season for Supernatural. I don’t know what is with this show but it just seems to improve every season. That is extremely rare for a television show. I really like the angel vs demon twist this season and I think this season is already on a good pace to become the best season of the show yet.

Rant: While My Name is Earl is kind of having a rebound season, last night’s episode was poor. I honestly don’t know if I laughed a single time in the entire episode. My Name is Earl’s problem has always come from the fact that it is way too inconsistent. One episode the show could be really funny and the next episode could be a total stinker. This time it was the total stinker.

Rave: Last night’s episode of the Office was pretty good. It was funny to see the three versions on the Joker and Jim’s classic Dave (his normal outfit with a Dave name tag). Add in the fact that Pam dressed up as a Charlie Chaplin that just so happened to look like Hitler. Combine that with the Dwight/Andy face off over Cornell and beat farming and there were quite a few laughs in the episode.

Rant: While the Office episode was pretty funny I don’t agree with The Office most likely getting rid of Holly. I personally liked Holly and I thoughts she was a good compliment to Michael. For the first time Michael actually shared some chemistry with one of his girlfriends. Holly was transferred though so I doubt the relationship will last much longer and Michael will probably end up going back to Jan once again. Who knows? Maybe Michael will find another woman at the office because it appears that is the only place he even considers dating people.

Rave: Last night’s episode was probably the funniest It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode of the season. I thought the episode all around was hilarious. First there was Mac and Charlie’s idiotic idea of deciding to share the mail room job and actually talking their boss into paying them less. I also love Charlie’s technique of sorting the mail (essentially burning everything) and his wacky conspiracy theory. Frank’s story ended up becoming a montage to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” after he is brought to a psych ward after overdosing on his medication. Finally it was hilarious to see Dennis and Dee’s thoughts on how to get healthy. I don’t know if it is just me but I don’t think their health plan is going to take off.

Rant: While last night’s Smallville episode was pretty good there are two things that are bugging me. First is the fact that everyone on Smallville seems to have serious problems remembering things and also being easily manipulated. By this time all of Clark’s friends should know of his secret identity since he has given both Jimmy and Lois plenty of opportunities to discover his secrets. Now in this week’s episode Jimmy actually figures it out and yet he is tricked by Oliver in a costume so he dumps the idea. It takes you that long to finally figure it out Jimmy and then you have no trouble to quickly ignore all the evidence you acquired. While it would have diverted from the Superman universe I wish the show would have actually let Jimmy in on Clark’s secret. The second thing that bothers me is that the show made Chloe a killer. I don’t know if it is me but I don’t want to see Chloe as a killer. Chloe really isn’t a killer so I didn’t like this twist at the end of the episode.

Rave: I am surprised that I am doing this but I am actually giving a rave to 30 Rock. Why don’t I just say that I haven’t really been a big fan of the show. While I never thought it was a bad show, I always thought it was the most overrated comedy on television. The third season premiere surprised me though. The episode was pretty funny even though I still think the show is overrated. I also have to give credit to NBC with sticking with the show. The first two seasons were far from rating hits. While the show isn’t a hit this season, the ratings have definitely jumped this season probably at least partially due to Tina Fey and her Palin impersonation. Let’s see if the show can hold that audience next week.
