While the major networks decided to give us nothing last night, television fans had to resort to cable television in order to get some good television. Thankfully two of the best cable shows (Monk and Psych) had their Christmas episodes last night. I have no idea why USA decided to air the episodes so early but I am glad since Monk and Psych saved yesterday from being a pretty poor night of television.
Monk S7.E9 Mr. Monk and the Miracle
I thought last night’s episode of Monk was pretty good. While the case was only okay and pretty simple to solve, there were plenty of moments that made up for it. First all the scenes with the “bums” were funny. The funniest was when Monk put saran wrap over the chairs and used a fan and air freshner to keep the “bum’s smell” away from him.
Other funny moments included Disher’s mustache that he tried to grow to look like Stottlemeyer, the Monk keep silencing Monk at the church (even though it got a little repetitive after a while), and finally Monk and Natalie essentially singing the solution to the case in order to under cover as Monks.
While it wasn’t the best Monk episode, it made me anxious till the new year for more Monk episodes. We only have one and a half seasons left so hopefully the series will start making progress toward Monk solving Trudy’s murder.

Psych S3.E9 Christmas Joy
Overall I thought last night’s episode of Psych was decent. The case was solid and there were funny moments, but the episode was lacking something that kept it from being a good episode.
One thing I do wonder about is why Gus’ family just seems to appear on Christmas episodes. Last year’s Christmas episode and now this year’s Christmas episode have both featured Gus’ family. I like Gus’ family I just wonder why they seem to only appear in Christmas episodes. I guess the Guster’s will just continue to have an eventful Christmas every year for the foreseeable future.
One other thing that has occurred in both Psych Christmas episodes is Shawn and Henry’s gift challenge where they try to guess the other’s gift. This years challenge was hilarious since they both used the exact same tactics in order to deceive the other. Hopefully this “tradition” will continue throughout the Psych Christmas episodes.
