eli stone the humanitarian 300x168 Rants and Raves (November 19th, 2008)Eli Stone S2.E5 The Humanitarian

Another good but not great episode of Eli Stone. I don’t know what is missing but this season of Eli Stone has kind of been disappointing so far. Eli Stone was probably the biggest surprise of last season and why I loved the show so much was because the show did something few shows do today, it was actually uplifting and charming. While those still remain this season they aren’t as prevalent as they were last season.

I think this is at least partially due to Eli not having nearly as vivid visions as he did the first season. I thought Eli’s wacky visions distinguished it from other shows. This year’s visions have been much more bland in my opinion. Despite not being as good as the first season, Eli Stone is a must watch and I encourage anyone who likes TV to at least tryout Eli Stone if they haven’t already.

Well unto last night’s episode. I am left wondering why Steven Culp always has to be the bad guy nowdays. Since his departure from Desperate Housewives, essentially all of his roles have been villains to varrying degrees. I also question how a two week episode arc will work on Eli Stone (the next episode will involve the same case). Since I thought this week’s case was only average, I don’t know if it really deserved two episodes. I guess we will have to wait and see.

On the positive side it is always great when a member of the cast spontaneously bursts into song. I also thought it was pretty creative when Eli decided to use the fact that the government had a monopoly of Marijuana for clinical tests.

Quotes:

Jordan: “This is everyone, Eli.”

Taylor: “I’m not pollinating anything.”

Patti: “I am the records room.”

Eli (talking to his latest vision): “You are a vision since things don’t spontaneously combust.”

Patti: “I need to make sure I can find him to kick him in the cajones.”

Eli: “When it is grown on taxpayer’s dollars it’s your pot too.”

Keith: “Were you threatening me with a butterknife?”

fringe the equation 300x200 Rants and Raves (November 19th, 2008)Fringe S1.E8 The Equation

Overall I thought last night’s Fringe episode was pretty good. I liked that is was sort of a Walter (my favorite character on the show by the way) centered episode. It was good to see more of what Walter had to deal with during his time in the mental institute. I do question why the show has decided to have Walter start seeing himself. While I like seeing Walter as a little mentally unstable, I kind of wanted the show to eventually let him get at least a little bit better. If this week’s episode is any indication that day won’t come anytime soon.

One other thing that I thing Fringe has been lacking lately is the humor that it had in the first couple of episodes. Obviously Fringe is far from a comedy but I liked it when Walter’s instability lead to some humorous moments. Hopefully the show will bring these moments back since I think the show could use them at times since the show can get pretty “dark” from time to time.

Quotes:

Peter: “Think we can jog your mind, Walter?”

Peter: “Don’t you think it is a little early for the good time cheer?”

Peter: “The government had you working on mind control?”

Walter: “I think that would depend on whether he has suceeded in killing himself.”

Walter: “This place is filthy. Did you have a party while I was gone?”

chase logo 300x85 Rants and Raves (November 19th, 2008)Cha$e S1.E2 The Botanical Gardens

If you read my thoughts on the premiere of Cha$e you already know that I thought it was a pretty good show. After seeing the second episode I stand behind that (I would recommend that more people check out the show) but I have some growing concerns about the show. First the show needs to keep changing things. I like that the second episode did some things differently than the first episode so hopefully that will continue. My biggest concern though is how the winner is selected. I personally hate the idea of the exit point. I would actually prefer that the game kept going until only one contestant remained.

Since they most likely won’t ever change from the exit point, I have a better way to do it. I think the show should give clues on the exit point through challenges that force the contestants to continually be on the move. This way contestants that are actually willing to take some risks and move around the gameboard will actually have an advantage over those that just hide. It will also make it more of a game if the show actually involved more challenges. At this point the winner is pretty much determined by who is luckiest by having the exit point closest to them at the end of the game.

While Chase is a good show I think the show could use some changes. If these changes were implimented I think the show could be much better.

house emancipation 300x205 Rants and Raves (November 19th, 2008)House S5.E8 Emancipation

I know I am probably going to upset quite a few people by saying this but I really think House is actually one of the most overrated shows on television. In my opinion House is only an average show especially since it really can’t have anything more than average episodes. The show also seems to feed off the exact same show structure every single episode; the patient is brought into the hospital, the doctors have a bunch of incorrect diagnosis, finally they solve the patient’s problem and in most cases save the patient just before they die. Add in the fact that the show seems to think everyone must be a doctor (with it’s overemphasis on medical jargon). While I am being pretty harsh on the show, I just feel that the show is overhyped and is only an average show.

Just like every other episode of House I thought this was a pretty average episode. The case was nothing special and at this point I really don’t care a whole lot about the possible “House/Cuddy relationship”. One thing I did like though was that the show might actually starting breaking away some of the characters from House. What I mean by this is that I like that Foreman is actually starting to do some of his own cases. Hopefully the show can actually start using Cameron and Chase more as well in the future.

Quotes:

Foreman: “Every teenager is stupid.”

House: “In conclusion, shut up.”

Cameron: “Don’t you work with three other doctors and a grouchy gimp?”

House: “Holding things in can give you cancer.”

House: “We should be organizing a parade.”

Foreman: “You want to prove you’re the only one with magical powers?”

Cameron: “Either that or he’s out to kill House.”
