Story

Pushing Daisies follows the story of Ned. Ned is far from your normal human being. He has been given the ability to bring people and animals back to life by just touching them. Ned has used this ability to help him solve murder cases along with his business partner Emerson Cod. Everything was going fine with their plan until Ned’s childhood crush (Chuck) is murdered. Instead of just using her for her information Ned decides to keep her alive. Ned and Chuck continue their childhood crush but can’t physically touch or Chuck will return to her dead state. Joined by Olive Snook (Ned’s employee at the Pie Hole who has a crush on him), and Chuck’s aunts (Lily and Vivian who are afraid to leave the house) this is far from your normal drama.

I have to say that if you have never seen Pushing Daisies you are really missing out. Pushing Daisies was the best new show of last season in my opinion. It’s just amazing me how such an original and imaginative show can actually survive on television. As you probably already know I am far from a big fan of crime dramas. At it’s base Pushing Daisies is a crime drama. Even though Pushing Daisies is a crime drama it doesn’t even feel like one since it has got so much else going on.

While the show’s basis is a crime drama the character development really steals the spotlight. It is hard to find as good of character development in a network show as you will find in Pushing Daisies. Every single character is intriguing and unique. This is really hard to find in a television show and it makes you really care about the characters.

The only complaint I could have with the story is that there just weren’t enough episodes. Sadly due to the writer’s strike there were only eight episodes in the first season. It’s a true shame that it was a shortened season since every single episode of the first season was a joy to watch.

Visuals

I rarely talk about visuals in a DVD set review but I couldn’t avoid talking about the visuals in Pushing Daisies. Pushing Daisies is one of the best shows of all time at least visually. It has to be the most colorful show ever. From the amazing sets to wardrobe you really have to appreciate the colors in Pushing Daisies. The visual style is just amazing. After saying this I have to say that you need to buy this DVD set in Blu-Ray if you have a Blu-Ray player. All I’ll say is that you will thank me later.

Packaging

Overall I am happy that some work was actually put into the packaging. While it is just a normal DVD case they really couldn’t have done anything more with packaging. The whole DVD case looks like the Pie Hole Menu. Along with the case is the episode guide which also looks like a menu. Combine that with the DVDs that look like pies and I have absolutely no complaints with the packaging for Pushing Daises.

Special Features

Overall I thought the special features for Pushing Daisies also shined. While it looks like it only has one special feature that is kind of misleading. While Pie Time-Time For Pie is technically the only special feature there is more to it than that. It is actually a feature with many 4-5 minute features on different parts of the show including the characters, storylines, and special effects. I found all of these to be entertaining. The only thing I didn’t like was the menu to select the special features. You have to select pieces of pie which brings you to one of the videos. I think the menu is dumb since you don’t even know what you are going to get when you select each piece of pie. While the menu is really stupid you still will love the special features if you are a fan of the show.

Final Thoughts

In my opinion Pushing Daisies is one of the best shows on television today. You have to appreciate that the show is willing to be original. I honestly can say that almost everyone should be able to enjoy this show. Unless you hate originality I can’t imagine you not liking this show. It essentially has something for everyone to enjoy. I have to highly recommend Pushing Daisies The Complete First Season.
