Pushing Daisies recently wrapped up it’s second and final season on ABC a couple weeks ago. Anyone who is a long time reader of this blog knows that I was a huge fan of Pushing Daisies. It’s disappointing that it’s run was cut short due to poor ratings in it’s second seasonsince it was one of the best shows on television. For those of you who didn’t catch Pushing Daisies first airing, you can now enjoy the series with it’s many fans now on DVD and Blu-Ray.

For those of you who are not familiar with Pushing Daisies, the premise involves a pie maker named Ned who has the ability to touch dead things and bring them back to life. Ned joined up with a private investigator and he now uses his ability to help solve crimes. Along with solving crimes Ned used his ability to bring back to life his childhood crush. While the show’s backbone is a crime drama, there is a lot more to the show.

There was two things I always liked about Pushing Daisies. First I liked the fantasy setting. Pushing Daisies might have possibly been the most colorful shows and had one of the most original styles in television history. From the amazing sets to wardrobes; it was hard not to cheer up while watching Pushing Daisies.

The second thing I liked about Pushing Daisies was the cast. There was honestly not a single weak link in the entire cast. Each character had their own unique personality and each actor did an amazing job with their respective characters. As a matter of fact Kristen Chenoweth was even nominated for an Emmy for her work this season.

There is only one problem I had with the second season of Pushing Daisies; it just wasn’t as good as the first season. The episodes in the second season were just not as engaging as those of the first season. It was honestly a really tough task since the first season was fantastic. The second season was still very good though.

As far as special features I have to say that I am pleased that Warner Home Video didn’t skimp out on giving the fans some good special features. There are four special features that delve into Bryan Fuller ane the vision behind the show and the second season; what goes into the scripts; a look at the music of Pushing Daisies; and finally a look at the special effects featuring how the rhino effect was created. I am usually not a huge fan of special features but I thought these special features were all entertaining and I would recommend fans check them out if you were planning on picking up the dvd set. I probably wouldn’t purchase the dvd set for the special features but they are definetly worth a watch if you pick up the set.

Unless you hate both crime dramas and fantasy character dramas, you should enjoy Pushing Daisies if you give the show a chance. I would recommend picking up the first season first though since there is quite a bit of character development throughout the first and second seasons.

For fans of the series I would recommend a purchase unless you don’t plan on rewatching the episodes. The special features are very good but like pretty much every dvd set they aren’t good enough by themselves to recommend a purchase.

It’s too bad that Pushing Daisies run was cut short but I know that I will remember it as one of the most original network television shows ever.
