Before getting to the recap I would like to say that I am so relieved that in last night’s episode, Psych returned to it’s wacky routes. I was really worried that last couple episodes since the show was too serious and had to many drama aspects. Obviously last night’s episode was far from believable but since when has Psych been believable. That is one of the reasons I have loved the show since it first began. I hope Psych continues on this path since Psych tried to add more drama to the show and in my opinion it failed.
The episode begins with Henry, Shawn, and Gus in prison. They are fighting and for some reason Gus is missing one of his shoes. The police come in to interrogate them and they demand that they tell them where the gold is. Shawn then proceeds to tell the police how they came to treasure hunting in the first place. The story begins 20 years earlier. Shawn is at school and it is parent’s career day. Henry isn’t at school though. Shawn’s uncle (Jack played by Steven Webber) is pretending to be Shawn’s dad and he tells the kids about his job as a treasure hunter. The kids love Jack and Shawn becomes the most popular kid in the class. That is until Henry shows up and tells everyone that Jack isn’t Shawn’s father.
The story then jumps to the previous night. Shawn, Gus, and Henry return home from a movie and they notice someone in the house. At first they think it is a burgler but it turns out to be uncle Jack. Shawn and Gus are glad to see him while Henry isn’t quite as thrilled. Jack asks them if they would be willing to help him find Bouchard’s treasure (a local treasure he has been looking for). Henry doubts Jack but Shawn and Gus are all to willing to help Jack. Jack pulls out his treasure map but the problem with the map is that a corner of the map is missing. He tells them about the treasure and how he thinks he is really close to finding it. He allows Shawn and Gus to be his partners and share in 50% of the haul. One of the reasons that Jack wants Shawn is that he actually thinks he is psychic.
They begin the treasure hunt by stopping by a Spanish museum. They pretend to be Spanish dignitaries in order to check out the rare artifacts. Jack tells Shawn that they need to find the missing corner since it contains the first clue in the treasure hunt. Shawn quickly recognizes some letters in the map and the letters spell out the Spanish word for painting. They look through the paintings in the museum and find a painting of a lighthouse which is referenced in the part of the map that is missing. They travel to the lighthouse but the lighthouse is not standing any longer.
At the lighthouse they run into some trouble as well. They are chased by some men and are eventually caught. They are tied up in a cabin and we find out the men used to be Jack’s partners. Jack tries to smooth things over but his former partners aren’t willing to talk. Since the men won’t let them go Shawn ends up telling them everything they know and tells them where the map is. They stay tied up until Shawn is able to call up Henry with Gus’ work phone. Henry rescues them but when they return home, Henry finds his home ransacked. Jack is about to give up on the treasure hunt but Shawn tells him that he remembers the map so it is not necessary for them to have it. Shawn uses his “psychic ability” to realize that jack hid a key in the house that the men were looking for when they ransacked the house.
Using his knowledge of the map and the key Shawn realizes that they need to head to a bell tower that was on the map. Henry joins the hunt since he doesn’t want Shawn or Gus to be hurt. They go to the location of the bell tower (it is currently a muffler store) and climb onto the roof to check out the area. They find a cliff that was referenced in the map so they head there next. When they get there they are chased by some new men and this is where Gus loses his shoe. They are eventually caught by the men and then they were taken to the prison.
The men that caught them are part of the Spanish government and are there to find the treasure to return it to it’s rightful home in Spain. The Spanish officials force Shawn and Gus to help them find the treasure and Shawn realizes that there is another hidden word on the map. Both hidden words combined represent the painted caves that are in the area. Shawn and Gus head to the painted caves with the Spanish officials. They dig and find the treasure (it is actually real). Shawn and Gus gather up all the gold pieces and the Spanish officials demand that they hand them over. Shawn refuses and tells them that he knows that they aren’t Spanish officials. Shawn catches them off guard and Shawn and Gus get away. They run through the jungle and are chased by the “Spanish officials” and Jack’s former partners. They get out of the woods and they run into Jack. Jack has them give him the gold and promises to meet up with them later.
Shawn and Gus are held up by the Spaish Officials (some more of Jack’s former partners) and the other pair of partners. The police show up just in time though and arrest all the former partners. Gus wants to know why the Spanish officials were imposters and Shawn tells him he could tell by their accent (it wasn’t a Spanish accent). Before leaving the police station Shawn snuck Juliet a note which alerted the police about the situation.
Shawn is waiting at a Red Robin (almost as bad as product placement as last week’s Dunkin Donuts product placement) for Jack to show up and he never shows up. Henry drops by and tells Shawn that Jack is not going to show up since he has done this so many times in the past that you can’t trust him. Shawn then shows Henry that he actually never gave Jack the gold. While running Shawn actually snuck the gold into his pockets and actually ended up giving Jack a bag of rocks. Shawn and Gus are going to donate most of the gold to museums but they are thinking about keeping some of it for themselves.
