The Flashback
It’s 1987 once again so it is obviously flashback time. In this flashback Shawn is preparing to do a bike trick by jumping off a ramp. A bunch of kids have gathered to watch him jump off the ramp. Henry stops him before he can jump though. Henry tells him that it is too dangerous and the spectators don’t really care about him. They just want to see him get hurt.
The Case
Shawn and Gus head to a motorcycle stunt show (the tickets were payment from a past case). The show feature Dutch the Clutch (Shawn’s favorite daredevil). Dutch’s stunt is going perfect until his bike explodes and he is flung into the air. Dutch somehow survives the explosion and everyone thinks that it was part of the stunt. Shawn notices that the gas line was leaking so he comes to the conclusion that someone is trying to kill Dutch.
Shawn and Gus try to warn Dutch that someone is trying to kill him when they meet his son Louis. Louis thinks something is suspicious since his father has almost been killed in the past two stunts. Louis tells Shawn and Gus that they need to go undercover though since Dutch doesn’t believe in psychics. They end up becoming stunt testors. Dutch doesn’t seem to worry about his life since he wants to keep trying more dangerous stunts.
Shawn and Gus try to get a list of people who have a grudge against Dutch but Louis tells them that Dutch has no enemies. Louis does tell them that he wants his father to quit doing stunts since he doesn’t want him to get hurt. Shawn and Gus then see Dutch overreact when he sees a commercial for El Diablo’s (a rival stuntman) next stunt. Before Shawn and Gus leave they briefly meet Vicky (Dutch’s wife).
Shawn and Gus think that El Diablo must be the attempted murderer so he could become the best stuntman in the world. Shawn and Gus head to a local motorcycle show in order to find El Diablo. They quickly find him and when they confront him he rides away on his motorcycle. Shawn chases after him on another motorcycle while Gus brings up the rear on a mini motorcycle. Shawn ends up catching up to El Diablo when El Diablo’s bike runs into some mechanical problems. Shawn finally unmasks El Diablo (he never has shown his face) and it turns out to be Louis. Louis tells Shawn and gus that he came up with the persona since his father refused to let him be a stuntman like him. Louis asks Shawn and Gus not to tell his father about his alter ego.
Shawn and Gus decide to try and find a new suspect since Louis obviously wouldn’t have hired them if he was trying to kill his own father. They shift their attention to Dutch’s agent Manny. They think it is Manny since he was actually responsible for getting the motorcycle that was used in the last botched attempt. Manny also has a financial benefit since if Dutch’s stunts are more dangerous people will be willing to pay more which gives Manny more money. Shawn and Gus get a background check on Manny from Juliet (he was arrested for several get rich schemes).
Shawn and Gus head to Dutch’s house and they see Dutch pull up and his car suddenly explodes. Shawn and Gus think he is dead but it turns out to be a test for a new stunt that he is going to do in the future. Shawn and Gus are then put to work as test subjects which freaks them both out so they start screaming. Manny then suddenly shows up and tells Dutch that he found a new stunt for him. They race out to a tall building where they are planning for Dutch to jump off the building a glide down to safety. Shawn quickly realizes a rip on Dutch’s gliding wings. Shawn tries to stop him from jumping and they both almost end up falling off the building. Dutch is furious at Shawn and Gus and when he finds out that they are psychics he fires them.
Shawn does realize that Manny isn’t the person trying to kill Dutch since Shawn used his lip reading ability to see that manny told Dutch to use his other gliding equipment but Dutch wouldn’t listen. Shawn found a new suspect though when he was thrown out of Dutch’s house. One of his guards (Red) has a tattoo that says Viking. Shawn realizes that it said Vicky at first so Shawn thinks Red is trying to kill Dutch in order to win Vicky back (they used to date before Dutch).
Shawn and Gus follow Red into the workshop. They think he is going to tamper with one of the bikes. Instead he goes into another room where Dutch is prepard to be given some shots. Shawn reads the names of the shots and Gus realizes that the drugs are used to alleviate pain involved in pancreatic cancer. Shawn decides that they need to find Dutch’s will since whoever is trying to kill him must realize that he is about to die from cancer. Shawn doesn’t find the will but does end up finding a life insurance which just so happens to pay more if Dutch is killed during one of his stunts rather dying of natural causes. If he died during one of his stunts a huge settlement would go to his son and wife.
Shawn solves the case. He heads to the arena and meets with Dutch. He tells Dutch that he knows he is sabotaging his own stunts in order to try and kill himself. Shawn tells him he knows about the cancer and that Dutch is trying to kill himself so his family has plenty of money after he dies. Shawn then reveals that Dutch’s previous attempts have failed since Dutch’s instincts have stepped in to save him on every stunt. Shawn tries to talk him out of killing himself by telling him that his family would rather have the 6 months with him (the amount of time he will survive with the cancer) rather than the money. Shawn tells Dutch it is his choice though and Shawn agrees not to tell anyone about what happened. Dutch decides to do the stunt though despite Shawn trying to talk him out of it. Dutch does the stunt and survives so it appears that Dutch actually listened to Shawn.
Lassiter’s Dating Problems
Lassiter arrives at the police station a little angry since his date ditched him. Juliet tries to give him some dating advice (don’t tell your date about serial killers) but he refuses to take the advice. Juliet is called into Karen’s office and she essentially tells Juliet to find a date for Lassiter since his dating slump is starting to affect his work. Juliet watches all the cops at the precent in order to try to find a woman that would go out with Lassiter. Lassiter and Juliet are on a stakeout when Lassiter brings up how Juliet has been paying more attention to him. Lassiter thinks Juliet is attracted to him. Juliet tells Lassiter that she is trying to find him a date because Karen forced her to. Lassiter agrees to Juliet’s help since he is having a hard time dating. During their stakeout, Juliet leaves the car for a while and Lassiter meets a woman named Blair. He thinks Blair is one of Juliet’s friends that she talked into going out with him. It turns out tha Blair is a hooker. Lassiter is shocked and makes Blair leave since he obviously can’t hire a hooker.
