Before I begin, great title Psych. A little long but how could you not love a title that references a football movie while also self advertising what time the show is on every week. Totally what you would expect from a NBC Universal show (since we all know how much they love to put advertisements wherever they can).

So with the Super Bowl tomorrow, and NBC jamming this fact down our throats (by this point who seriously doesn’t know the Super Bowl is on NBC?); should it really come as a surprise that this week’s Psych was a football themed episode. Unlike Burn Notice’s Hot Spot, I actually didn’t get the blatantly obvious hidden Super Bowl advertisement from Psych’s episode. If you didn’t know NBC was doing Super Bowl advertisements with all their shows, you probably wouldn’t have even noticed that this episode of Psych was trying to get you to watch the Super Bowl. You would have just thought that this was a football themed episode. As a huge football fan myself (Go Packers!) I thought this week’s Psych episode was one of the best of the season.

So we begin in 1987 like every other episode. Due to being a police officer, Henry is able to get himself and Shawn into the players tunnel for the local professional football team. After the game in a scene that gave me visions of the Mean Joe Green Coke commercial. Shawn tries to get an autograph from the star quarterback Sammy. Instead of a touching moment of a boy giving a coke to Mean Joe and getting his jersey as a reward, Shawn uses his powers of observation to tell Sammy how he can stop throwing interceptions and gets the game ball in exchange. Maybe it is just me but that doesn’t seem like a coincidence.

In this week’s case the police department investigates the disappearance of the kicker for the aforementioned local professional team. When the kicker’s foot is found in a wooded area, the police begin investigating. While the police investigate a Russian mob lead, Shawn goes undercover with the team with the help of Sammy (who is now the head coach). Shawn goes undercover as a kicker who is trying out for the team while Gus works as a training intern. While Gus comes up creative ways of giving players massages without actually touching them, Shawn tries to not make a fool out of himself on the football field.

When the police find Vlad’s body they have so much evidence pointing towards the Russian mob. Shawn knows that there must be something more to the case. While investigating the players he notices that a group of the guys have similar rashes and cuts. Shawn eventually discovers that Vlad actually wasn’t murdered. He was killed in an ATV accident. Three of his teammates were with him and since they were breaking a behavior clause in their contract (allowing them to be cut and lose all their money), they decided to cover up his death. They knew he was in trouble with the Russian mob so they just framed the Russian mob for his death. For helping the team with the murder investigation, the team allows Shawn to lead them out onto the field for one of their games.

So as I have already mentioned I liked this week’s episode quite a bit. It just seemed like in my opinion that Psych returned more to it’s wacky roots. While I am not upset that Shawn is starting to grow up a little (it had to happen eventually), I do miss some of his wackiness. This week’s episode gave Shawn and Gus the ability to be their wacky old selfs.

I am also liking that Psych is really starting to hint towards Shawn and Jules hooking up pretty much every episode. They were destined to eventually hook up so I have to say the earlier the better. My guess is that something with their relationship will go down in this year’s season finale.

Finally here are some of my highlights of the episode:

  • Shawn wanting the police to contact him like Batman by creating a signal of his face.
  • The reference to Shawn watching the Mentalist since in my opinion the Mentalist is a dramatized version of Psych.
  • How Lassiter was so proud of actually finding Vlad’s body before Shawn.
  • How Shawn and Gus acted like a group of school girls while they admired Sammy the first time they met him.
  • Gus’ no touching massage therapy technique which just involve shining a lamp on a player’s back.
  • Shawn being so proud of making a 20 yard field goal when that is a chip shot in the NFL.

Quotes:

Shawn (to Henry about Sammy): “He’s way better than you.”

Shawn (after being denied a badge): “We’ll settle for guns.”

Jules (to Lassiter): “Google missing foot. That’s your plan?”

Gus (to Shawn): “Literally no one is with you.”

Gus (to Sammy): “I slept on your face for years.”

Sammy (to Shawn): “Did I just see you give an interview to ESPN?”

Gus: “I only use these hands to touch myself.”

Shawn: “Resourceful Gus makes an appearance.”

Shawn: “How do I look?”
Gus: “Like an idiot.”

Jules (to Shawn): “I didn’t know they made pads in extra small.”

Your Take: What did you think of Any Given Friday Night at 10pm, 9pm Central? Did you like that the show returned with a wackier episode? When do you think Shawn and Jules will eventually hook up? Finally are you sick of NBC’s lame attempts at sublimal advertising for the Super Bowl?
