In this week’s episode Shawn and Gus become firefighters when they get a case to investigate a bunch of fires. All the firefighter’s except for the arson investigator, Conrad, believe the fires are accidents. When Shawn finds bones inside one of the walls though it quickly becomes as arson investigation. Shawn and Gus try to fit in with the firefighters and end up running through the firefighter obstacle course while the talk with the firefighters to get more information.
The police investigate the bodies in the walls and determine that they died 10 years earlier. It turns out that the victims were members of a group of arsonists who ten years earlier set a fire that killed two firefighters. When Shawn and Gus’ prime suspect (the fire chief) is killed in one of the fires, they have to shift their focus on the other firefighters. Shawn and Gus discover that a former firefighter and current building inspector is the arsonist and the murderer or all the bodies found in the buildings. It turns out that he had killed the arsonists ten years earlier and buried them in the walls. The buildings were going to be torn down though so he had to burn them down in order to cover up the evidence that lead to him. The building inspector tries to kill himself in the last fire he sets but Gus saves his life. For his bravery, Gus is given the opportunity to become a volunteer firefighter.
So I thought last night’s episode of Psych was pretty good. While the episode didn’t really have any laugh out loud moments, it did have it’s share of funny moments. Here were the moments that I thought were pretty funny:
- Shawn and Gus attempts of trying to come up with a word to describe both an arsonist and a murderer.
- Shawn and Gus’ pathetic attempts to actually do the firefighting obstacle course.
- How Gus thought the firehouse was the natural habitat of the Dalmatian. In order to make Gus feel better that the firehouse didn’t have a Dalmatian he ends up finding another dog and paints spots on the dog.
- Gus and Shawn storm a room full of children on a field trip with Gus wielding an axe. They then try to explain their storming into the room by trying to teach the kids not to smoke.
Along with the humor, I liked the addition of Conrad (the arson investigator). While she was a little cold at first, Shawn got her to lighten up and then she became a pretty good character for the episode. While there is probably not a lot that the show can do with the character, I wouldn’t be upset if the show decided to bring the character back for another episode sometime in the future.
While I enjoyed the humor and I liked the character of Conrad, the one thing that kept this episode from being a great episode was the case itself. It wasn’t a bad case but it really wasn’t that interesting either. I don’t know if it just me but I have thought this season’s cases have been kind of weak. Maybe Psych is just in a slump. Next week’s Super Bowl themed episode look hilarious though as Shawn and Gus investigate the murder of a football player.
Quotes:
Henry (about Smokey the Bear): “He poops in the woods. Is that what you want?”
Shawn: “He’s making a mockery of these proceedings.”
Gus: “It’s called a fire Shawn.”
Shawn: “That’s his email signature.”
Shawn: “Shotgun on the firepole.”
Shawn: “We are not not going into a burning building.”
Shawn: “I need the super sniffers.”
Gus: “No sliding down the pole when I’m not here.”
Gus: “I don’t play with killers.”
Your Thoughts: What are your thoughts on Earth, Wind and… Wait for It? Did you like the case? Did you like Conrad?
