Before talking about this week’s case I would like to remind all of our readers of our Monk/Psych Prize Giveaway. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s completely free but you only have until January 23rd, 2009 to get your entry in. So if you haven’t signed up yet be sure to sign up and then come back and we’ll talk about last night’s episode of Psych.
As the title of the episode so elegantly explains, Lassiter Did a Bad Bad Thing in this week’s episode. Not really but the police at first think he did. After finally catching one of the leaders of a local gang, Lassiter brings the leader to the police station. When the lights in the police station go out, gun shots are heard. When the light’s come back on everyone rushes to the prisoner cells and they see Lassiter with his gun out over the dead body of the gang leader.
While the police don’t want to suspect Lassiter of killing the gang leader, he is the top suspect since he was near the prisoner cells during the shooting and he was upset that the FBI were planning on giving the gang leader a deal in order to rat out the rest of the gang. Lassiter is taken off the force while he is being investigated.
Lassiter knows he is in trouble so he asks Shawn and Gus for their help. Instead of making fun of him in some way, Shawn and Gus sincerly agree to help him. While I like that Shawn, Gus and Lassiter’s relationship is developing; I am also kindof missing the shots at Lassiter since they always lead to a bunch of laughs. Well it doesn’t really matter since the gang needs to work together in order to save Lassiter from being tried for murder.
While Lassiter mopes around Henry’s house, Shawn dropped him off there when Lassiter got too annoying for him. Shawn and Gus discover that there was actually another prisoner in the cells that night and he must have seen what happened. When they track down the criminal (he was released the next day), the criminal turns up dead.
Shawn and Gus determine that the other criminal must be key in solving the case. They check the police records and find out that the records of the other criminal are missing. They head back to the office and try to piece everything together. A police officer named Dremmer shows up at their office and asks Shawn how the case is coming. Dremmer realizes that Shawn is onto him (he is the actual murderer) so he ends up kidnapping Shawn and tricks Lassiter into coming over so he could stage that Lassiter killed Shawn. Lassiter has a trick up his sleeve though and uses a gun hidden in his candy dish to take down Dremmer. (Who actually hides a gun in his candy dish?) Dremmer is charged with the murder of the gang leader and Lassiter gets his spot back on the police force.
Overall I thought this week’s episode was solid. The episode was a good chance to find out more about Lassiter, but the episode just wasn’t as funny as it could have been and the case was disappointing. I am actually quite disappointed in Psych’s case for the episode. How hard could it have been to come up with a more original solution. If you have seen as much television as I have, you knew it was going to be an inside job. I have seen enough corrupt gang detectives to know that in TV Land pretty much every gang detective becomes corrupt at some point. Combine that with some questionable clues and I have to say I was disappointed by the case.
On the positive side here are some things that made me laugh:
- Shawn’s discussion on the variety of snack foods including Funyuns.
- When asked by internal affairs if Lassiter would be capable of shooting someone, Gus and Shawn say that they think he would eventually either shoot someone or plant evidence.
- In thanks for saving his career, Lassiter just gives Shawn and Gus a coupon to a restaurant. I guess that is the definition of “It’s the least I could do.”
Quotes:
Shawn: “This is way better than cable.”
Jules: “Shawn. Enough with the Funyuns.”
Shawn: “If you get one without cheese, it’s haunted.”
Shawn: “See Gus. I’m not the only one not paying bills.”
Shawn: “At most Lassiter would plant evidence.”
Your Thoughts: What are your thoughts on this week’s episode? Did you think the case was extremely predictable? Do you like how Shawn and Lassiter’s relationship is developing?
