Last night Psych’s 3rd winter premiere of Psych aired. In my opinion Psych has kind of been off and on this season. Obviously all the episodes have been good (Psych has yet to have a bad episode) but some of the episodes just haven’t been on pace with the first two seasons. I think it is at least partially due to the show getting rid of some of the wackiness and replacing it more serious storylines (at least for Psych anyway). So was the winter premiere a good beginning for the final episodes of season three?
So this week’s case involves Shawn and Gus investigating the murder of a famous Sea Lion named Shabby. At first Shawn doesn’t know that Gus is making him attend Shabby’s funeral but while at the funeral Shawn determines that Shabby was murdered. At the funeral a woman named April overhears them and wants their help. She was actually recently fired from the aquarium where Shabby was staying at before he was released. She ends up getting them to break into the aquarium in order to spy on Randy (a famous wildlife tv star) since she thought he was acting strangely around the aquarium.
Shawn and Gus end up getting arrested when they are caught trying to ride a dolphin (after first spying on Randy). This gets Lassiter and Jules on the case. In one of the funniest moments of the episode, Lassiter thought Shawn and Gus were investigating the murder of a human being and even thought Shabby Thesealion was actually a real name (he thought it was French). After Shabby is given an autopsy, it is determined that he was murdered after all since he was shot.
Shawn and Gus end up stealing Henry’s boat in order to investigate the area where Randy released Shabby into the wild. When they are there they run into two men who pretend that they are lost since they are in restricted waters. Shawn and Gus determine that Randy is innocent and only released Shabby at a different spot than originally planned since he wanted to get a better shot. With some more investigating, Shawn determines that the men they met on the water earlier were responsible for killing Shabby. They were actually trying to recover some stolen diamonds that had sunk to the bottom of the water after a plane crash. The police end up arresting the men.
Finally in a scene that should probably be pretty interesting in the upcoming episodes, Shawn ends up asking April out but April declines and she hints to Shawn that Jules has feelings for him. This shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise since the show has been hinting at the relationship since the series premiere. I think it’s about time that the show delves into it. If I had to put money on when the relationship begins, I would put my money on the season three finale.
In just a sidenote that really has nothing to do with the episode, did you see the commercial for KIA during one of the commercial breaks. In my opinion that is probably the future of commercials. For those of you who didn’t see the commercial, Shawn and Gus stopped a burglar by having him try to steal a KIA car. In my opinion if this is the future of advertising on television (which would actually go back to the old days of advertising) I actually might watch more commercials. If the commercials kept the same tone as the show it would be kind of a continuation of the show and could make commercials possibly interesting again. Plus then we could finally get over all these stupid commercials that are played over and over and over again and drive anyone who sees them nuts.
