S7.E9 “Mr. Monk and the Miracle” (11/28/08): Three homeless men hire Monk to find out who killed their friend. The police ruled it an accident but they believe it to be murder. Monk quickly finds enough evidence to have the case re-opened. Meanwhile, Captain Stottlemeyer is having severe back problems (bad enough that Disher is in charge of the station). He does learn about a miracle fountain outside a monastery that heals ailments (and finds a picture of the fountain and the word “drink” on his front door). He doesn’t believe it at first but eventually takes a drink from it. In two days he feels much better. Using bottle cans as a clue, Monk figures out that the murdered man was outside Stottlemeyer’s house the day he died.
Stottlemeyer takes a vow of silence and joins the monastery because he thinks being healed was a sign from God. Monk eventually notices a pile of pill bottles, canes, etc. near the fountain. Over half of the pill bottles came from the same pharmacy. It turns out that Stottlemeyer’s pharmacist caused his back problems and murdered the homeless man because he witnessed him drawing the picture on Stottlemeyer’s door. The fountain was going to be replaced with a schoolroom and the pharmacist had buried the body of his former partner (who he murdered) under it. If it turned out to be a “miracle” fountain, they wouldn’t be able to get rid of it. Stottlemeyer leaves the monastery after finding out the fountain was a hoax.
