mythbusters Mythbusters S6.E14 Blind Driving (October 8th, 2008)

Blind Driving: This myth comes from the movie Scent of a Woman. Supposedly if you give a blind person step by step directions they are able to safely drive. To begin the myth Adam and Jaime both tey a driving course blindfolded while the other one gives them directions. They both fail miserably. They decide to ramp up the tests and actually have a blind man drive the car while Jaime gives him directions. The blind man drives the car perfectly. They do the course again with Jaime drunk and since the directions are worse it is harder to the blind man to drive. This myth is actually confirmed as long as you give the blind person good directions. I am actually pretty surprised that this myth was confirmed since I wouldn’t have thought that turn by turn directions would be accurate enough in order to guide a blind person.

90% Air-This myth states that if you are stuck behind a tree that you are supposed to shoot right at the tree since 90% of the foliage area is just air so it shouldn’t affect your shot 90% of the time. Since Tory is the only team member that has any golfing talent at all, he and a golf ball shooting machine test the myth and it is determined that only 25% of the balls shot into the tree aren’t affected at all. So this myth is busted. This really wasn’t a surprise to me since in my golfing experience I can never shoot a golf ball through a tree. That could possibly be because I am not a very good golfer in the first place.

Lightning Cleats-In this myth you are supposedly more likely to be struck by lightning if you wear metal spikes on your shoes than if you use plastic spikes. The team tests the myth by using two dummies made out of ballistic gel and puts one type of cleats on both of them. They then use a lightning machine to determine which will attract the lightning. It turns out that the lightning doesn’t prefer either golfer so the myth is busted. This really didn’t come as a surprise to me since I didn’t think such little spikes would attract lightning.

Gopher Goner-The final myth of the episode is actually the classic scene from Caddyshack. For those of you who haven’t seen Caddyshack the scene involves the groundskeeper packing dynamite into gopher holes in order to get rid of a pesky gopher. The explosion ended up destroying the golf course in a large explosion and the shockwave from the explosion actually knocked a golf ball into a hole that was previously teetering on the edge of the hole. The team just recreates the circumstances of the myth and things don’t go the same as they did in the movie. There is no fireballs from the explosion and the ball is not knocked into the hole. Myth busted.
