mythbusters Mythbusters Recap: Phone Book Friction (September 10th, 2008)

Phone Book Friction

Adam and Jaime actually received this myth from a fan that actually tried it themselves. According to this myth if you take two phonebooks and alternate their pages it is imposible to pull them apart. Adam and Jaime alternate the pages of two phonebooks and start trying to pull them apart. They try pulling it apart themselves, with a group of 10 people and even two cars. The books will not come apart. Finally they are able to get the books apart but they need to use two tanks and 8000 pounds of preasure to do it. Even though the myth is busted it was truly amazing how the phone books stuck together.

Black Powder Shark

Kari, Tory, and Grant decide to test the ending scene in the “Deep Blue Sea” and see if it is actually possible. In the scene the hero uses black powder from flare to create a bomb that he attaches to a harpoon in order to blow up a killer shark. There are actually five components to this myth so the team tested all five. First they test if a battery could actually ignite the powder like it did in the movie. It turns out that it is not possible. The second thing they test is whether a harpoon could actually be shot as far as it was in the movie. It turns out that it actually is possible. Third they test how much black poeder is in a flare. They determine that there is not nearly enough gunpowder to create the explosion from the movie. They test it just in case and determine that they actually needed 400 pounds of black powder to recreate the explosion from the movie. Finally they determine that the hero could never have survived the aftershock from the explosion. Obviously this myth is busted.
