After being promised by USA a shocking season finale for Monk, I have to say that I was disappointed. The episode itself wasn’t bad but it was really lacking information in Trudy’s case. I thought this episode would give us a big clue going into the final season but we were once again left with very few answers. After the jump I will continue discussing the episode but I also have some theories regarding the final season of Monk and the resolution of Trudy’s murder.

While I was disappointed with the lack of clues for Trudy’s murder, there was still some good moments in this week’s episode. The Monk vs. Krenshaw rivalry was as good as ever. The highlight was when Krenshaw tried to find out the name of Monk’s new therapist.

Other than that I thought it was hilarious when Monk tried hit on the secretary in order to get her to vote his way. He then threw away the goodwill when he essentially told her she was dumb when reveling the solution to the case.

Since next season will be the final season of Monk, I have decided that this is a great chance to make some predictions on how I think Monk’s final season will end. I think what most people are looking forward to is Monk finally solving Trudy’s murder. I can see three different scenarios playing out.

First is the most conservative in my opinion. Monk could either not figure out who killed Trudy or the series could end with Monk finally solving the murder but the killer never being revealed. The series could end with something like Monk saying “I’ve solved the case.”

Second and possibly the most satisfying would be for Monk to find Trudy’s killer and it actually to be a character we have gotten to know quite well over the seasons. There are actually quite a few possibilities. The show could go with the shocker and either have Stottlemeyer, Disher, Sharona, or Natalie be the killer. While these solutions would be shocking, I think they would be stupid. Otherwise the show could go for a recurring character. Obviously Dale the Whale is the obvious choice but he might be too obvious. I am going to throw Harold Krenshaw’s name out there. Monk and Krenshaw have always hated one another and Krenshaw appears to always get in Monk’s way. Killing someone could also have put Krenshaw in his present condition. Krenshaw also appears to be associated with a lot of government groups in the area so maybe Trudy found out something about him.

The final solution to Trudy’s murder could be just a random person we have yet to meet. I personally think this would be sort of a cop out. While it isn’t a risky solution, I really can’t possibly see it as a good series finale. Since Trudy’s murder pretty much set up the whole show I kind of want the murderer to be someone we already know; not someone who just came out of nowhere.

In my opinion option two has the possibility of providing the best solution. It also has quite a bit of risk if the show doesn’t do a good job explaining why the character did it. Otherwise I wouldn’t mind option one either. It is the safe alternative and would provide a satisfying conclusion.

Well next season of Monk should be interesting. I am assuming we should get some closure on Trudy’s death. I also hope Monk makes some progress towards finally getting over his fears.
