LOST - LOST, Season 5 - This Place is Death

After a somewhat disappointing episode last week, Lost didn’t repeat that trend this week. Instead of raving about how great the episode was, I have decided to just get to the point and discuss some things that really stood out in this week’s episode. At the pace Lost is answering questions this season, they might seriously have to start posing more questions in order to have enough left to cover in the final season.

In what really didn’t come as much of a surprise, Charlotte indeed did spend her childhood on the island. Well it appears that she was part of Dharma and left the island when she was young. This prompted her to search for Dharma in order to try and find the island again. We also found out that Charlotte was warned not to come back by an old man, that looked like Daniel, that told her she would die if she returned to the island. Obviously Charlotte didn’t heed the warning and it appears like she might have died.

While I don’t buy her actually dying, the revelation about Daniel could be big. There has always seemed to be some connection between the two. I don’t know what the connection is but I think there is more to the story than Daniel just talking with a younger Charlotte in one of these time flashes. I think he really must have been on the island at another time in the past. He just knows too much about the island and it is kind of odd that he somehow just came up with a way of time traveling off the island.

I have a couple theories. First Daniel might have grown up on the island and was subjected to the time flashes which might mean that he actually is quite a bit older than he appears. Richard Alpert appears able to defy ever getting old. Maybe he jumped through time so many times that it doesn’t appear to affect him anymore. It is odd that everyone except for him appears to get nosebleeds. Second (and this theory is WAY out there) I think Daniel might have some connection to Jacob. Maybe Daniel was possessed by Jacob or the Smoke monster or maybe Daniel eventually becomes Jacob. I really don’t know but I have a hunch that there is something connecting Daniel to Jacob. Charlotte did afterall find the “old Daniel” scary.

Meanwhile I am happy to see the Rousseau flashes. It appears that what Rousseau told the survivors about what happened to her crew was at least partially true. I still think there is something more to what actually happened. Or at least I hope there is. It appears that the smoke monster does “live” at the temple and it also appears that it either possesses people or that it spreads a disease of some sort. Maybe it possesses people and then can assume their shape to appear before other people.

Finally Locke is able to get off the island by “unjamming” the donkey wheel. It appears that he was supposed to turn the wheel in the first place instead of Ben (or at least that is what Jacob thinks). I have a feeling Ben might have known that and still turned the wheel himself in order to win back Jacob’s favor.

Well all that matters is that I am guessing the Jeremy Betham days are begining. I wonder if Locke will continue to jump through time even though he know appears to be off the island. He will have his work cut out for him since no one besides Jack and Sun (after finding out Jin is alive) are willing to go back to the island. Maybe the Oceanic Six can go back to the island in waves since it appears that Mrs. Hawking (who unsurprisingly appears to be Daniel’s mother) doesn’t have a problem sending just a couple at a time.

While I doubt this will happen, I actually think Lost should take an episode or two to show us when Locke confronted the Oceanic Six and how they get back to the island. We can then resume with the Losties still present on the island. I think this would work because when they get back to the island we can get caught up on what happened on the island over the last three years. I can just imagine how much must have happened over that time period.
