After such a long break, Lost has finally returned. With such a great season four finale, Lost definitely had it’s work cut out for it with the season five premiere. With such high expectations you would think that Lost wouldn’t be up to the task. While the odds were against it, Lost meet the high expectations and was even able to exceed them.
Recap:
Off the Island:
- Off the island Jack and Ben prepare to move Locke’s body. Jack cleans up and finally gets rid of his ugly beard.
- Kate faces her own troubles when some lawyers show up asking for Kate to take a blood test in order to prove that Aaron is truly her son. Instead of risking the chance of losing Aaron, Kate takes Aaron along with her and goes on the run.
- Sun meets with Charles Widmore and they discuss killing Ben.
- Hurley and Sayid go on the run after Sayid breaks Hurley out of the mental institute. Sayid ends up killing two other people who are after them. Some people see them though and they are now the suspects in the murder of two people. In the fight Sayid is shot with a tranquilizing dart so Hurley has to try and the avoid the cops while he deals with a passed out Sayid.
- Desmond wakes up after a dream where Daniel tells him to find his mother. (See below for further explanation.) Desmond and Penny head to Oxford in order to find Daniel’s mother.
On the Island:
Marvin Candle (the Dharma video guy) gets ready for a day of work. It turns out that he is actually preparing to make one of the Dharma videos. His taping is interrupted though when there is an accident at one of the Dharma stations. They were trying to drill into the chamber where the wheel Ben used in the last episode was located. Marvin thinks there is energy in the chamber that will allow time travel so he tells them to continue digging but to do it carefully. As he leaves the chamber we see that Daniel is one of the Dharma workers.
Back on the island we find out that the people on the island are now caught in a time loop. Everyone on the island is skipping back and forth through time in random intervals. Daniel tries to explain to everyone what is going on. Supposedly they can’t change the future no matter how hard they try. The team shows up at the hatch. Sawyer tries to get Desmond to open up the hatch for him but nothing happens. When Daniel tries though he is able to talk with Desmond since he has a prior relationship with him (when Desmond met him at the university). Daniel tells Desmond that he needs to find his mother off the island. Finally Charlotte starts getting some nose bleeds. Daniel knows something is up but tells Charlotte nothing is up.
Locke on the other hand ends up seeing the crash of the drug plane and ends up being shot by Ethan. Richard Alpert ends up saving his life and asks John to find him when time skips again. He gives him a compass to show the Richard in the other time period so he will trust Locke. Finally Richard also tells Locke that he needs to die in order to convince the Ocaenic Six to return to the island.
My Thoughts:
Being able to see the episode early I have been able to digest what happened in the first episode for around a week now. I have to admit that while it is awesome to see an episode early, it is also very hard since you can’t really talk to anyone about what happened. After seeing the episode for yourself, you probably can see how hard that truly was.
Obviously the biggest revelation in the episode was that the survivors on the island are now trapped in a time loop. While I was skeptical of the idea at first, after I got used to it I thought it was a brilliant idea. It’s a great storytelling idea and will be used to finally give us some real answers about the island and it’s inhabitants. (You will know what I’m talking about after seeing the third episode.) I honestly don’t think the show could have come up with a better idea for what happened to the island.
The scene to begin the episode really intrigued me as well. As long as the scene is truly in the future which I believe it is, it seems like the people on the island are truly starting to adjust to the time traveling conundrum. If Daniel has gone undercover inside Dharma, I wonder what the rest of the survivors are doing. I also wonder how in the world Locke got off the island.
Your Thoughts:
What are your thoughts on the season premiere of Lost? Do you like the time traveling twist?
Quotes:
Daniel: “Your camp isn’t gone. It hasn’t been built yet.”
Sawyer (to Daniel): “Give me your shirt!”
Sawyer (after slapping Daniel): “Shut it sister or you’re getting one too.”
Sawyer: “When are we know wizkid?”
Locke: “When am I?”
Sawyer: “It’s the ghost of Christmas future.”
