Review: “Locked Up Abroad” takes a new angle this week. While most of the people featured on this show were arrested (usually for drug-related charges), this week’s episode is about a man who did nothing wrong but be in the wrong taxi at the wrong time. After his life spirals out of control, Greg Williams decides to volunteer as a missionary in the Philippines. Unfortunately, his taxi is ambushed by a violent Islamic group called Abu Sayyaf and he is kidnapped for ransom. Having no knowledge of where his fellow missionaries are, Greg suffers a few beatings before deciding to figure out a way to escape.

I loved both of the first two episodes of this season but “Locked Up Abroad: Kidnapped in the Philippines” is even better. It is sometimes hard to feel sorry for some of these people who got themselves arrested since they were guilty but that isn’t a problem this week since obviously Greg did nothing wrong. Also, the stakes are even higher in this episode since instead of prison, the worst possible sentence for Greg is death. That makes the episode even more thrilling and scary than the series usually is.

Tune in tonight (April 15, 2009) at 10/9c to see Greg’s story.
