Three episodes in and things really haven’t changed much for me regarding Lie to Me. The concept is good. Tim Roth is great for the lead role. It’s too bad that the cases just don’t hold up. While this week’s cases weren’t as predictable as previous episodes, Lie to Me really has it’s work cut out for it regarding it’s cases. Lie to Me shows such promise from time to time. Too bad the show can’t ever seem to live up to it’s promise.
In this week’s main case, Lightman’s group investigates the murder of the daughter of a federal judge. Lightman first suspects the mother (the federal judge) since she shows no facial expression when they talk to her about her daughter’s death. It turns out that she used Botox so she wasn’t able to show emotion even if she tried. They head to the funeral and Lightman suspects the popular girl at school since he notices she lies during the funeral. The popular girl tells Lightman about the victim buying drugs from another kid at school. The drugs turn out to be medicine in order to keep her energy up so she can keep studying since she is at a prestigious school and wants to get into one of the best colleges in the nation. Her academic standing was so important that the federal judge even ended up bribing one of the teacher’s at the school to take the SAT’s for her daughter so she could score high enough to make the college she wanted. Finally after that huge goose chase, it turns out the the popular girl killed the victim since she had paid the teacher to take the SAT’s as well and the victim was going to tell people that she had cheated.
The secondary case involved Gillian and Eli investigating a plane crash of an experimental NASA plane. NASA thinks the pilot crashed the plane on purpose. After ruling out attempted suicide, they determine that he was actually taking a drug in order to get over depression and anxiety. This violates the rules at NASA and puts his job in jeopardy. It turns out that his wife was sneaking the drugs into his food since she thought he had a problem and she tried to help him.
Finally Lightman’s daughter gets brought to the office by the police after they bust a party that she was trying to hold at the house. Lightman makes her clean up the office as punishment. While cleaning the office she finds some pictures of Lightman high and thinks he is a hypocrite. She is angry at first but after Gillian talks with her, she realizes that her father trusted her earlier even though he knew she was lying.

I watched this show for the first time this week. I found it very odd because I found the lead character (Tim Roth)compelling but the whole time I kept thinking, “Bah, I don’t buy it.”
I don’t believe the show is going to make it. Of course, I thought CBS’s Psych ripoff wouldn’t make it either, so that shows what I know.
