After originally being planned to air two weeks ago, last night Leverage finally aired The Wedding Job. I was anticipating the episode since I thought just the idea of the gang doing a heist during a wedding could be hilarious especially with Nate being the pastor. Well I wouldn’t say I was disappointed. It wasn’t the best episode in the series, but once again Leverage provided another great hour of television that has been sorely lacking  for a while.

I won’t really talk about how great a show Leverage is since at this point The TV Legion’s regular readers already know how much we love the show. When we actually first received the screener for Leverage, I honestly have to admit I wasn’t expecting much. I actually even thought about not even watching it. Well I guess it was a good idea that I gave the show a chance since Leverage has now established itself as one of the top 10 shows on television and could be nearing the top 5 very very soon.

Well onto this week’s episode. This week the gang faces off against the mafia. Sophie gets a client whose husband took the fall for a mafia boss in exchange for money but the mafia boss backed out of the deal and didn’t pay what he promised. Nate isn’t happy about going against the mafia but he eventually agrees to go along with the plan.

The gang needs surveillance on the mafia boss in order to develop their heist in order to steal the money.  They end up pretending to be FBI agents in order to take a peek at the FBI’s surveillance from their “cleverly hidden” surveillance van. I don’t know if it is just me but those two guys had to be the dumbest FBI agents in the world. Hopefully the rest of the FBI aren’t nearly as incompetant as those two agents or I would really start worrying about my own safety.

The gang ends up creating a heist where they pretended to be a wedding planning team. Sophie is the wedding planner. Nate’s the priest. Eliot is the cook (which surprisingly he seemed to like a little too much). Parker was the seamstress (who likes to insult the bridemaids). Finally Alec was the DJ. While working on the wedding (for the mafia bosses daughter) the gang tries to find out where he hides his money so they can steal it.

The gang’s plan doesn’t go quite as planned and they end up having to actually throw a wedding. Nate actually officiates the wedding and goes into one of the weirdest sermons I have ever heard. The gang eventually finds the location of the money but they are beat to the money first when the mafia boss’ wife steals it all. If that wasn’t enough an “old friend” of Eliot’s shows up at the wedding and recognizes Eliot (from a flashback we see that they ended up fighting each other in a house that appeared to be burning down). Eliot and the gangster end up getting into a fight with kitchenware which includes Eliot actually using a whisk to defend himself. Eliot ends the fight by squirting one of his appetizer’s into the gangster’s eyes.

The gang ends up getting some of the mafia boss’ money. They give some of it to the bride and groom (so they can get away from the mafia for good) and the rest they give to their client. Finally they get enough evidence which they turn over to the FBI which gets the mafia boss arrested while the client’s husband is set free.

One thing that really surprised me about this week’s episode was that it didn’t appear that the episode tried to take a shot at the Godfather especially with the whole gangster’s daughter’s wedding. This episode was a great example of why Leverage is such a great show though. What I like about the show is that all the characters are interesting and original. Many shows have a hard enough time having one unique character. Leverage has a whole cast of original characters. The show also does a great job of giving us backstory on each character within cases instead of taking time to just give us some flashbacks.

Quotes:

Alec: “I’m the coffee and you’re the cream.”

Alec (insulting Eliot’s knowledge of technology): “I know baby steps.”

Nate: “You have been very negative lately.”

Alec: “I would have got fat and started up a comic book shop.”

Nate: “Eliot, stay away from the butcher.”

Eliot: “These peaches aren’t going to poach themselves.”

Nate: “Did you just kill someone with an appetizer?”
