With Kyle XY returning to ABC Family in January, it’s the perfect time for the second season DVD to be released. For those of you who have never seen the show before, continue reading to see why you should give Kyle XY a chance. For those of you who have seen the show and need to get caught up for the latest season or just want to know what you will get if you purchase the DVD set, be sure to read the rest of this review.

For those of you who have never seen Kyle XY, it follows the mysterious Kyle and the Tragers (the family who adopt him). Kyle XY has no memory of his past and also has superhuman abilities. In the second season Kyle continues to learn more about his past and also runs into a girl named Jessi who happens to be a lot like Kyle.

This DVD set includes all 23 episodes of the second season. If I had to compare the second season to the first season, I would have to say that they are both very similar even though I don’t think the second season is quite as good as the first season. Both seasons are good though and Kyle XY is a good sci-fi character drama.

The acting in Kyle XY is a little above average. Matt Dallas is a good young actor and is the star of the cast. Meanwhile the rest of the returning cast won’t be confused as great actors but they do their jobs well. The new addition this season is Jaimie Alexander as Jessi. While I didn’t like her or the character at the beginning of the season, her character and acting improved as the season progressed.

As far as the special features are concerned, I really wouldn’t consider them a reason to purchase the DVD set. While two of the special features are pretty good, the rest are average or totally worthless. More details on each special feature follow:

  • Deleted Scenes-Typical deleted scenes that really don’t need to be seen.
  • Alternative Ending-An alternative ending to the midseason finale. Nothing special and not much different than the original midseason ending.
  • Facing the Future-A worthless special feature that looks ahead to the second half of the season. Since the second half of the season is in this dvd set I don’t really see the point of seeing a preview of the second half of the season.
  • Livin’ with the X’s-Go behind the scenes of Kyle XY by seeing a typical day in the life of Matt Dallas (Kyle), and Jaimie Alexander (Jessi). Overall the best special feature since it lets you get a glimpse of everything that goes into making a tv show.
  • The Science of Kyle XY-A look at how science plays a part in Kyle XY. A pretty interesting special feature that shows how everything in Kyle XY is scientifically feasible.

Kyle XY isn’t for everyone. If you don’t like sci-fi, I can’t imagine you liking Kyle XY since there is quite a bit of sci-fi in the show. While the second season wasn’t as good as the first season, if you liked the first season of Kyle XY you should also like the second season. If you don’t mind sci-fi and like a good character drama I would recommend you check out Kyle XY even though I would begin with the first season obviously. In my opinion Kyle XY isn’t a great but good show that is worth watching.
