The Halloween favorite It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is finally on DVD for everyone to enjoy. While Linus waits in the pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown goes trick or treating. Meanwhile Snoopy is battling the Red Baron once again.
As most of you already know It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a holiday classic for a lot of people. I had seen the movie sometime in the past but had mostly forgot about it until I received the DVD in the mail. I have never been a big Peanuts fan and have also never been a huge fan of the holiday specials. While I didn’t think It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was a great movie I didn’t think it was bad either.
Overall the plot was pretty average in my opinion. It wasn’t a bad holiday movie but one problem I had with the film was that the story was a little disjointed in my opinion. The stories don’t really run well together in my opinion. It’s like three movies where pieced together without enough work being put into it to get them to work with one another. The individual stories weren’t bad but I thought the different stories could have been put together better.
Since this special was actually created back in 1966 it is obviously a little outdated. The video has been remastered and it looks better but no one would confuse It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown with good animation. The animation has dated a little bit which probably won’t affect a ton of people but I think it might affect some people.
It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown actually has two special features. The first is another half hour cartoon called It’s Magic, Charlie Brown. In this movie Snoopy performs some tricks which don’t go so well and Charlie Brown is left invisible to the rest of the world. Snoopy needs to figure out how to reverse his trick or Charlie Brown will remain invisible. Overall I thought the movie was about as good as It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. It obviously is not as well known but if you like Charlie Brown and the Peanuts you should really like it even if you have seen it before.
The other special feature is called We Need a Blockbuster Charlie Brown. This special feature is essentially a behind the scenes look at It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. It takes you through the whole process of how the film was made. I don’t remember exactly how long it was but it was somewhere between 10 to 15 minutes. If you are a fan of the movie you should enjoy it quite a bit since I learned quite a bit from it.
Before I get to the recommendations I do have to bring up one thing. Even though you get three videos on this DVD you need to know that if run time is important to you, you will be disappointed. The main movie is 25 minutes. If you add on the other special features the DVD is only about an hour long. This is pretty short for a DVD so if this is important to you, you might have a problem with this DVD.
Overall I thought this DVD was pretty average. I have never been a big fan of the Peanuts so that might be part of the reason why I didn’t get more enjoyment out of the movie. If you are a fan of It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown or a Peanuts fan in general I think you should enjoy this DVD and won’t regret picking it up.
