For the past two chapters (season two and the first half of season three) I have been far from the biggest Heroes fan. The first season of Heroes was great. It was one of the best shows of that season. The show has disappointed ever since the first season though. With stupid storylines and the fact that even if you died you really didn’t die, Heroes has been astray for quite some time now. When things encouragingly got better for an episode or two, things immediately fell apart again. So with the fourth chapter Fugitives starting last night I have to say that I am cautiously optimistic about the fourth chapter. While Heroes still has a ways to go to redeem itself, last night’s episode was the first step in the right direction.

So as the title of the chapter states, all the Heroes except for Nathan (who betrayed the rest of the Heroes in the last episode) become fugitives. In order to hide from Nathan’s silent ninja capturing squad, they all try to get on with their lives and for the first time in a very very long time, most of them actually get jobs. (Welcome back to being regular citizens again.) I guess the Heroes ran out of money in this bad economy and finally realized that they actually needed a job. Claire is staying with Angela trying to pick a college to attend. Peter is back to being a paramedic. Hiro tries to get Ando to be a hero but he would rather pick up women at the strip clubs. Tracy is pretty much doing nothing like usual. Mohinder decides to be a cab driver so he can conveniently replay a scene from the first season with Peter. Matt and Daphne are together but their relationship is strained since Daphne doesn’t stop using her powers. Finally Sylar (who unsurprisingly isn’t dead) starts searching for his long lost father.

So everyone appears to be getting on with their lives until Nathan’s secret agency captures them all and boards them all onto a plane. Thanks to Claire’s help they end up breaking out of custody but a hole is punctured in the plane so the plane crashes. Before the plane crashes, Claire finds out that HRG is working for Nathan’s organization.

Despite the fact that I think Heroes is trying to ripoff Lost with the plane crash, as I have already mentioned this episode was actually quite good. I think the secret agency is interesting and I really like Zeljko Ivanek as the leader of the group. I think he should bring a pretty interesting character to the show. Nathan also makes a pretty good villain (hopefully his stint on the show is over after this season though). I am also interested in finding out why HRG is working with Nathan.

The one concern I have though is that I don’t know exactly where the series is going with the storyline. Hopefully it won’t just become Prison Breaks Heroes edition. Heroes better have a good plan for the rest of the season instead of appearing to just piece a bunch of things together like they have done the past two chapters. If they can continue to find unique story ideas for this chapter, I think this chapter could really bring Heroes back to it’s former glory.

Quotes:

Heroes Commercial: “Save the taxpayer. Save the World.”

Ando (about Hiro’s proposed costume): “I wouldn’t be caught dead in this.”

Ando (to Hiro): “Get yourself another hero.”

Your Take: Do you think Heroes is finally turning the corner? Are you excited about this season’s storyline?
