Harper’s Island: The Killer Revealed

Harper's Island

Last night Harper’s Island wrapped up it’s run with it’s two hour series finale. The killer has been revealed and fans of the series got closure about the happenings that occurred on Harper’s Island. I was excited about finding out who was the killer but I have to admit that I was disappointed with the reveal. To avoid spoilers for those who haven’t seen the series finale I will discuss my thoughts on the killer after the break.

So if you are still reading you must have already seen the finale and found out who was working with Wakefield from the beginning. I have to admit that I honestly wasn’t really surprised by Henry being the killer. To tell you the truth I believe he was my first suspect. Other people might have been surprised by the reveal but I knew he was the killer after the foreshadowing to Jimmy in the previous episode and the beginning of the finale.

While Henry wasn’t much of a shocker in my opinion, I didn’t mind Henry being the killer. I just was disappointed with how the finale was set up. I personally would have dumped the last half hour or so (the whole thing with kidnapping Abby) and instead lengthened the chases through the woods, and showed how Henry was able to get away with the murders for so long.  They then could have ended the series the same way with Abby killing Henry and escaping with Jimmy. I do have to admit the wedding videos were a nice touch at the end though.

As far as Henry’s motives I think they were okay. I am glad that Wakefield’s son was behind the killings. I didn’t want to find out that Wakefield and the other killer weren’t working together. I would have found it hard to believe that two killers ended up on the same island with different motives. Henry’s second motivation was just creepy in my opinion. I am assuming that Henry was insane but why would he end up killing a bunch of people just to hook up with his sister. If he only wanted Abby there are many other ways he could have gotten her without killing a bunch of people. A different plan would also have been more successful since I doubt mass murder is a turn on for anyone.

While I was disappointed by the series finale I have to say that Harper’s Island was a fun summer distraction. There were two things I really liked about Harper’s Island. First I liked that the series gave viewers the chance to actually try and guess who the killer was. I really think this idea needs to be added into more crime dramas since most don’t even give the idea a second thought. The second thing I liked was that we knew from the beginning that Harper’s Island was going to only be one season. The show was guaranteed to give closure. That is always appreciated in serialized dramas. I also give props to CBS for letting Harper’s Island finish out it’s run uninterrupted. It’s too bad that the same can’t be said about other networks. I just wish Harper’s Island would have done better in the ratings so we could get more series like Harper’s Island. Fans of the series will just have to enjoy the fact that we all got a fun/interesting summer distraction.

So what did you think of the finale of Harper’s Island? Did you suspect that Henry was the killer?
