While the concept for the episode was pretty gimicky, I thought the episode was pretty good overall. I think this season is getting back to what the show great in season. While this season is far from as good as the second season, it is shaping up to possibly be the second best season of the show.
This week’s only case was a group of 12 surgeries. 6 patients needed kidneys and they all have a family member that was willing to donate their kidneys but they weren’t matches. Bailey ends up setting up an exchange where everyone gets the kidney they need. Obviously everything doesn’t go as planned as one wife (one of the donors) finds out that her husband is cheating with another of the donors (there have been a lot of cheaters on this show recently). She almost drops out of the surgery but ends up still donating her kidney. There is also an estranged relationship between a son and his father (played by Carl Lumbly known for Marcus Dixon on Alias). The father doesn’t survive the surgery but he is finally able to reconnect with his son. Since I am obviously not in the medical profession I have no idea if these type of programs actually exist. If they don’t I don’t know why they don’t since it would be much easier to find donors and more people could be saved.
Meanwhile in the hospital Derek is happy that his clinical trial (with Meredith) was published in a medical journal. Meredith isn’t given any credit though which upsets her. When Meredith confronts Derek about it he tells her that she is just a resident and she needs to learn a lot more before she starts getting credit. Derek eventually apologizes and offers to give Meredith credit for the research as well.
Since George passed his intern test he is finally a resident so the rest of the gang needs to determine which of their interns they are going to give to George. They end up putting the interns through a bunch of ridiculous tests. The chief eventually gets sick of it and just gives George some interns. When Lexie finds out that George didn’t get her, she is upset that George didn’t fight for her and that he seems to not even recognize her. I hope this fight doesn’t last long since I personally want a George-Lexie relationship. Since this is Grey’s Anatomy who knows if it will ever happen.
Callie and Hahn’s relationship takes the next “step”. The next morning Callie is akward since she didn’t really enjoy herself. She ends up getting advice from Sloane and she tries it again. I don’t know if it is just me but I am glad that the show finally decided to actually do something with the relationship. Who knows how long it is going to last though since a new character is going to be brought in soon in order to test their relationship.
Finally it is good that Kevin McKidd’s character, Dr. Owen, is back. If the one episode he has been in is any indication I think he will be a very interesting character. While I don’t think he has become a regular yet, there have been rumors that the show is really looking into turning him into a regular since they like what he brings to the show. If his first episode was any indication I think that would be a very good idea.
