It’s 2009 and it probably couldn’t have come any earlier for Grey’s Anatomy. With all the off screen problems to the idiotic storyline of Ghost Denny, 2008 wasn’t too kind to Grey’s Anatomy. So was the first episode of 2009 the turnaround of Grey’s Anatomy needed or was it just another episode. In my opinion it wasn’t a great episode but it did bring in some pretty interesting storylines that could pay off in future episodes.
The Serial Killer: In what will probably go down as one of the biggest Grey’s Anatomy stories of the season, Seattle Grace ends up having to work on a serial killer that was stabbed in prison days before his execution date. I was actually anticipating the storyline since I first heard about it since I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen when the surgeons at Seattle Grace had to save a man that was a murderer and was going to die soon anyway. After last night’s episode I was left a little disappointed since I think more could have been done with the storyline. I am not giving up on the storyline though since it does last a couple more episodes and has the chance to develop into a pretty good storyline.
The Child Who Needs a Transplant: Finally after what has seemed like forever, Bailey finally gets her own storyline (other than just scolding the interns and 1st year residents). Bailey has always been one of, if not the best character on Grey’s Anatomy but in my opinion she has never really gotten many storylines. So I am glad that they finally gave her a story about her trying to save a young boy who ends up needing a transplant. Since this is a multi-episode case, hopefully the storyline can continue to develop and Bailey can finally get the screen time she truly deserves.
The 12 Step Program Not to Sleep With an Intern (a course every doctor at Seattle Grace should be forced to attend): In easily the funniest part of the episode, Callie and Sloane both have to deal with their weakness to try and stop sleeping with interns. Even though I still think Sloane and Lexie together is creepy and I really don’t care all that much about Sadie, I thought these moments were hilarious. While I really didn’t like Sloane when he was first added to the cast, I have to admit that he has been one of the few bright spots recently. I also love the friendship between Callie and Sloane since it is one thing the show has been missing for a very long time.
Letting the Ghost Out of the Bag: Finally Izzie tells Alex that she has been seeing Denny. Alex decides to just shrug it off since he thinks it is pretty harmless (it definently is strange though). Any long time reader of The TV Legion should already know what I think of the Ghost Denny storyline. I am sad that such a great character in season two has pretty much been made into a joke. Hopefully this storyline can end sooner rather than later so Jeffery Dean Morgan can actually play a new role and maybe he won’t be killed for once.
The Fragile Woman: In what was pretty much a filler storyline; George, Callie and Sloane worked on a woman that had a tumor which made her bones so weak that they kept breaking. Just like most filler storylines, there really wasn’t a whole lot to the storyline in my opinion.
Derek the Dancer: While this actually wasn’t a storyline, I had to bring up Derek’s dancing at the end of the episode. While I am assuming he was supposed to dance terribly on purpose, if that was as good as he can dance he obviously won’t be showing up on the next Dancing With the Stars.
Quotes:
Denny: “He’s going to think you’re a wackjob.”
Sloane: “These interns are out of control.”
Alex (about Denny): “Tell him I said hi.”
Alex: “You’re fake dying.”
Hunt: “Seems like you short a friend.”
Callie: “We need a 12 step program.”
Callie: “Don’t get naked with an intern.”
Callie: “Keep starring at Joe and we’ll be fine.”
